The Week Ahead - Term 2, Week 5
Monday 15 May 2023 to Friday 19 May 2023
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
I hope that you have found the adjustment to the first full working week of Term 2 okay. Personally, I found that the week has gone by fairly quickly and here we are at Friday afternoon again. What I did find difficult was the āwelcome to Winterā on Monday morning after being down on the coast last weekend and experiencing temperatures of around 26 degrees. Thank you for your support in ensuring that your student[s] still present well dressed in their college uniform as they include additional layers to keeping warm.
Congratulations to our Junior College Choirs on their outstanding performances at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod coming away with a Highly Commended [Junior Choir] and 2nd place overall [Senior Choir]. I believe that we had over 100 Junior College students on stage for this! Thank you to Mrs. Hayley Sugars and her team of supporters for the work done in this area of the Arts program at Concordia. Week 5 is just around the corner and we are now less than a week away from presenting our much anticipated College Musical We Will Rock You at the Empire Theatre ā see you there!
Congratulations to our Cross Country Team at the QCIS Cross Country on Tuesday. Well done on your outstanding success on the day. We won the Aggregate Trophy and came Second in the Overall Trophy. Thank you to all the athletes and families who committed to and contributed on the day. You should be very proud of the way you competed hard and performed with determination and enthusiasm. A special thank you must be extended to Mr. Darron Skinner-Martin, Mr. Col Anderton and Mr. Darryl Fry for their support and encouragement of our team. An outstanding Concordia Lions Team effort. Concordia has now won 3 of the 4 trophies at the QCIS Inter-School Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals, with 2 more trophies up for grabs at the QCIS Track and Field Carnival in Term 3.
One of the goals stated in the Community component of both our Strategic Plan and 2023 Annual Plans reference Concordiaās reputation as a leading coeducational school through a growing visibility in the wider community. Lifting interest in national and international boarding in a coeducational setting is one part of this process by conducting Boarding enrolment tours to regional catchment areas. Concordia has a wonderful opportunity to market an intimate boutique boarding offering where every student is part of an authentic home away from home experience. I need to thank Ms. Maureen Taurima, House Parent of Girlsā Boarding, for representing the College and showcasing boarding at the recently held Goondiwindi Show while Ms. Belinda Sanders, Director of Marketing and Enrolments, and I will be at the Roma Show this weekend to ensure that boarding at Concordia stakes its claim and visibility in this rural community.
This week I would like to focus on our secondary students by looking at Setting Boundaries with Teens. Establishing rules and boundaries with teens might often feel like a losing battle. Sometimes using words like ārules and ādisciplineā can cause conflict between parents and teens.
Instead, try creating āagreementsā with your teenager which leaves some room for negotiation and for all stakeholders to agree on. When your teenager helps make these agreements, they are more likely to follow them. In fact, they might even suggest stricter consequences than you would!
By involving your teen, you are showing them that you trust them and respect their growing independence. This helps build trust and respect between the two of you. Creating agreements also teaches your teenager self-discipline and gives them the chance to prove they can be responsible.
KEY TIPS:
1. Negotiate agreements according to the age of each child. As they get older, demonstrate that you are listening to and appreciating their growing need for more independence.
2. Be firm, fair and consistent in applying agreements and consequences once agreements have been established.
3. Generously praise responsible behaviour: Let them know you are proud of the way they are honouring the family agreements and showing maturity. [Acknowledgement: The Fathering Project]
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers and boarding staff, who take on the important role of mothers and mentors, who are part of the Concordia community a very blessed and relaxing Motherās Day on Sunday.
Stay safe and have a great weekend.
Yours in Christ.
Mr Anton Prinsloo

As our children grow older and become adolescents, they will want to become more independent and are more inquisitive about the world around them. Our role as parents has been to provide a safe and supportive environment for our children that protects them from any concerning outside influences. Gradually, adolescents will start to become more exposed to outside influences and potential risk-taking behaviours. Ensuring adolescents are well-informed about social issues and equipping them with the necessary skills on how to handle these situations are vital toward ensuring they feel confident in making the right decisions.
One area receiving a lot of attention amongst the media and within the community is vaping and e-cigarettes. There is a growing concern amongst society of young people perceiving vaping as a trendy pastime. Vapes are deliberately marketed to gain the attention of a younger demographic and this presents significant risks for adolescents who may be unaware of the potential impacts this can have on their health and wellbeing.
The Lung Foundation Australia (2023), states that there is a misconception that vaping is merely harmless water vapour where in fact itās an aerosol made up of tiny toxic particles. While the long-term health effects are still relatively unknown, it has been proven that vaping in the short-term can be associated with nausea, vomiting, mouth and airway irritation, chest pain and heart palpations.
The Lung Foundation Australia encourages families to talk to adolescents at home about vaping to better inform them about the associated risks. When having these conversations, it is important to discuss the facts, be honest and candid with them, avoid judgment and be ready to listen to their responses.
Parents can access further information about vaping through the .
In addition to this, School TV hosts a range of information to assist families when having conversations at home around this topic. The following special report provided below that outlines some key facts about vaping and recommendations on how to address this matter within the home.

CLC Track and Field Sports News
Today we held our annual wrap up and presentations of Age Champion Medals for Track and Field achievements in 2023. All students must be commended for their enthusiasm and resilience alongside some great sportsmanship on the day. This was evident by a number of records being broken in various events and students recording their own PBs throughout the Carnival.
While the presentation was about celebrating individual achievements our Carnival was an opportunity to have a go and have some fun along the way. From our youngest Year 3 student to our oldest Year 12 student, I am happy to say this was evident on many occasions and I would like to congratulate all the boys and girls on their efforts. Well done!
From this carnival, many of our athletes will be named to represent Ā鶹“«Ć½ both in the Central Zone and Queensland Combined Independent Schools (QCIS) teams to compete in each event. Students will commence training soon for these competitions which will be held in Term 3 with our sports coaches in their chosen events. We wish them every success in their efforts at these carnivals.
Thank you all once again to all for the support on these days to make it a great experience for all concerned. A special mention to our staff who worked tirelessly on the day, along with grounds staff in their preparation of the ovals. Thank you also to the parents and friends of the College who turned up in mass to show their support for their children on the day. I am sure that the children appreciated this.
Congratulations to the following students on their achievements for Track and Field. There were some extremely close results in many of the age divisions.

JC Uniforms
As the weather begins to cool and the leaves change colour, schools across the country begin the process of transitioning from their summer to winter uniform. The changeover to winter uniform can bring a sense of excitement and anticipation as students get to experiment with new outfits and styles. It can also be a challenge for families who may need to invest in new pieces of clothing to ensure their child is properly dressed for the colder weather. Despite these challenges, the changeover to winter uniform is an important annual tradition that helps students prepare for the upcoming season and creates a sense of community and unity within the school.
This time presents a great opportunity to review our uniform guide. A few points to note that have been conservations on recent assembly or in classrooms are…
Ā· Monday is our formal uniform day regardless of weather unless notified by College.
Ā· Sport shoes are navy or white and worn only with sport uniform.
Ā· Layering under uniform is fine as long as we canāt see it.

JC Reading Challenge 2023
JC Library News
This term we are having a Junior College House Reading Challenge. You may have noticed that your child has brought home a template for a book review or a Lego character template. Please encourage them to fill in this sheet to the best of their ability. There is no limit to how many each student is allowed to submit. I am giving away 6 x $10 gift vouchers at each campus to spend at the Scholastic Book Fair to the best efforts I receive next week.
The countdown is on to the Scholastic Book Fair and National Simultaneous Storytime. Next week, the products will all be arriving and the students will have an opportunity to browse the selection and fill in a wish list to take home and discuss with their families. An invitation will also be sent home with all students as a reminder of the days and times the fair is open at each campus. The support for this event last year was amazing so I am looking forward to seeing how successful our annual Book Fair is this year.
