The Week Ahead - Term 2, Week 4
Monday 8 May 2023 to Friday 12 May 2023
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
The past week has all been about running faster, jumping higher and further as well as throwing further as Concordia held its Track and Field Carnivals for both the Junior and Senior College, and didn’t the weather just turn it on for the carnivals. Well done to all the students on the participation numbers and effort put in across the College. Congratulations to those athletes who used this opportunity to shine and showcase their God-given talents and abilities in this area of our sports program. We are now looking forward to watching our athletes represent Concordia at the upcoming inter-school carnivals and selection trials. Thank you to the many parents, caregivers, family members and friends who attended to support the students – it was great to see so many grandparents in attendance! Thank you to all the staff who assisted as officials and encouraged every participant. Thank you to our HPE staff led by Mr. Darryl Fry and Mr. Darron Skinner-Martin on planning, organising and hosting excellently run carnivals.
It is with much regret that I am informing you that Darron Skinner-Martin has decided to leave Concordia at the end of the term. This decision was not made lightly by Darron as he has considered the after-school commitment required to run a successful sports program, as well as the daily travel from Plainland and the impact which this is having on his wellness and his family. Darron has made the difficult decision that he is seeking a different balance at this stage in his career. Darron has been an integral part of a team who has been working tirelessly behind the scenes in realigning our Sports Program and strategy at Concordia. I thank Darron for his collegiality and contribution as a member of this group. The College will now begin a process of recruiting a new member for this team.
I had the privilege of quickly visiting the Glenvale Hockey Centre to watch our Girls’ Hockey Team participate in the Darling Downs Schools Cup on Wednesday. Well done and thank you ladies, you were wonderful ambassadors for both Concordia and your families on the day. Thank you to those parents who attended as supporters as well as those who assisted as Team and other officials on behalf of Concordia.
Have you got your tickets? The other very obvious busyness happening and building up at the College is the College Musical, We Will Rock You, which will be on stage at the Empire Theatre in just under a fortnight! Thanks to you as a parent community for your support of the College during this time of rehearsals and other arrangements at all sorts of times. I hope to see many of you at this event as we celebrate a rich tradition of the Arts at Concordia. Good luck to those students who will be representing Concordia at the upcoming Toowoomba Eisteddfod which kicks off this weekend.
During the past Easter holidays, I spoke with a family who shared with me how busy their family life is and how, at times, they needed to remind themselves to slow down and enjoy the many precious moments and joys of parenthood. Raising children is hard work, often thankless and mind-numbing and yet often the most rapturous experience available to us as adults. Most of us suppose that parents are both happier and more miserable than non-parents, that child rearing dictates a wider emotional range than people have generally known before it. Most parenting stresses us to our limits, no matter how much we love our children. Our children upstage all the other components of our lives and good parenting involves both helicoptering and disengagement.
Children may complicate our lives, but they also make them simpler. Children’s needs are so overwhelming and their dependence on us so absolute, that it’s impossible to misread our moral obligation to them. We bind ourselves to those who need us most and through caring for them, grow to love them, grow to delight them and grow to marvel at who they are. There is a useful distinction to be made between our “experiencing self” – living in the present moment and our “remembering self” – putting together our life narrative or story. Our experiencing selves prefer doing the dishes, napping, shopping, answering emails or dare I say it, being on our devices to spending time with our children. But our remembering selves assert that no-one and nothing provides us with so much joy as our children.
It may not be the happiness we live day to day, but it’s the happiness we think about, the happiness we summon and remember and experiences that make up our life stories. Enjoy finding the joys and memory-making of parenthood. [Acknowledgement: Andrew Sullivan and Jennifer Senior]
Ms. Belinda Sanders, our Director of Marketing and Enrolments, and I will be visiting the Roma Show at the end of next week where we will be showcasing our wonderful College and our Boutique Boarding offerings to that community. I would like to acknowledge and thank Belinda for the time and work put into coordinating this visit on behalf of Concordia.
Stay safe and have a great weekend.
Yours in Christ.

Communicating the Gospel
During the reformation of the 15th century, Martin Luther and fellow reformers made liberal use of a recent new invention (new to Europe at least), the printing press, which enabled mass communication through the widespread and relatively cheap distribution of printed leaflets and tracts. Luther also translated the bible into the German language making it accessible to a much wider audience than the previous Latin translation used int eh church did. I guess over the years we had various translation of the scriptures, which are regularly updated because language is living thing and changes over time (just compare King James or Shakespearian English to the modern Australian version).
I recently came across the presentation of the gospels in Japanese art form of Manga, and this reminded me that the bible is a living document whose unchanging message needs to be re-translated again and again to speak into the lives of people of a particular time and place. I am very aware that many students like reading graphic novels, and struggle with large slabs of text, which is how the bible often presents itself.
So, we now have in our library available the “Manga Messiah”, the story of Jesus told in the art form of Manga. I hope it will inspire students to read and gain access to the amazing message of Christ in a form that speaks to them today.
Have a wonderful week.
God Bless.

I hope you are now back into the swing of Term 2. The year is racing away!
This month we have already visited the Goondiwindi Show and next week we will be at the Roma Show. If there are any old scholars at Roma please come and visit us as we would love to catch up with you!
We have a relatively recent additional resource available to parents and carers, SchoolTV. Have you had a look yet on the Â鶹´«Ă˝ website? SchoolTV is an award-winning wellbeing resource that can support you in the challenges relating to modern-day parenting. We highly recommend it!
We are busy planning our upcoming Boarder Experience Weekend on May 26-28. This event gives prospective students the opportunity to experience our welcoming, beautiful boarding community firsthand.
We know - choosing a boarding school is a BIG decision! I was a boarder myself and it was a daunting experience at first, so this week helps take the nerves out of boarding life. If you or friends are interested, please head to the website to register and more details.
To help families plan their budget, we have a fee calculator at the bottom of the enrolment page on our website. It is an invaluable tool for families who are planning ahead. It helps families to plan financially for their children's college education well in advance and take the worry out of trying to come up with the money at the last minute. The fee calculator provides a breakdown of the costs associated with attending Â鶹´«Ă˝. This makes the process of paying for college easier, providing families with the financial peace of mind that comes with knowing that their children's college education is taken care of.
Concordia has been making headlines lately, and we hope that parents have been able to watch, listen, and read about our wonderful school. Stories featured in the media have related to sport, international visitors, and soon our school musical We Will Rock You which we all can't wait to see.
I hope you have bought your tickets; it will be a wonderful show and it is great value for money. The two casts have been working very hard so if you can try to see both!
Thank you for being part of the Â鶹´«Ă˝ family!

JC Library News
The countdown is on to our 2023 Scholastic Book Fair and National Simultaneous Storytime. It is only four weeks until this exciting annual event occurs. The flyer included in this newsletter gives the dates for each respective campus. The Resource Centres will be open from 7:30am before school on the mornings of the Book Fair and until 4:00pm after school in the afternoons. The students will be given an opportunity to see the collection available and to create a wish list to take home to discuss with you. I look forward to seeing many families come in to browse and shop the wonderful collection of Scholastic books and novelties.
This week the students will have taken home a copy of the latest Scholastic Book Club Catalogue. Orders from this issue are due back by the 5 May. This will be the only Scholastic Book Club we are doing this term as we are having the Scholastic Book Fair later in the term.
Families that were billed for outstanding Library books and Home readers will be issued a credit if the books are returned.

Another week at the Junior College and another successful Athletics event. Today saw our Years 3-6 students compete in our Junior College Interhouse Track and Field Carnival. This carnival followed on from our Interhouse Cross Country Carnival in Week 1, and our Prep - Year 2 carnival in Week 2.
Each of these events highlighted not only the extraordinary talents of all students but also showcased the incredible persistence, determination and resilience of every competitor.
A special thank you must go to Mr Fry for the huge amount of organisation and planning that goes into these events, as well as to the Junior College staff and parent helpers who have assisted at these carnivals. Selected students will now go on to compete at events at a Central Zone level as well as being a part of our QCIS teams.
Our Junior College Senior and Junior choirs have been working hard over the last couple of weeks in preparation for their performances at the Eisteddfod this Sunday. The students are singing beautifully in their rehearsals under the careful eye of Mrs Sugars and we wish them well for the weekend.
Term 2 is always short and sharp with many events happening across both Junior College campuses in the coming weeks. All information will be provided to you via The Week Ahead or your classroom teacher. If you are requiring any further clarification regarding any of these events, please contact your Campus Reception for assistance.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you for our first full week for the term next week.
Blessings for the week ahead.

Throughout last term our students have been participating in PE classes and preparing for this year’s Junior College Track & Field Carnival which is to be held now this Friday 5 May. In week one, our students participated in the pre carnival 800m event which was a great afternoon of competition between all houses with many students running some great times, with a few records being broken, and a number narrowly being missed. The 2023 Discus events have been completed also, and it sets the tone for a big day of competition at our Carnival.
Our Junior College Track & Field Program has been released with various information for the day along with event timetable. Communication regarding any changes and reminders will be forthcoming in the following weeks via our various platforms as normal for this day.
Our Zone Cross-Country Team has been training before and after school, with many taking the advantage of these sessions at school, and at Kearneys Spring Reserve to familiarise and prepare themselves for this event. Congratulations to the following team who went on to compete for Concordia at the Central Zone Championships and represented the school magnificently on the day, with many of our runners finishing towards the top ranked performers.

HSC Pod Play - Request for items
Our students are looking to extend their play up in the Forest, so we are planning to introduce “Pod Play”. Pod play involves a container full of high quality, clean recycled materials that the children can pull out and play freely with in whatever way their imaginations may take them.
Pod Play provides opportunities for all children to work together to create a fun, new play environment each time they pull out the materials from “The Pod”.
For our Pod Play to become a reality, we need your help! We are looking for lots of clean, recycled items that the children can use. The following is a list of ideas of things that would be very helpful:
Clean bed sheets
Plastic electrical cable rolls
Old car tyres
Large cardboard boxes
Silver air conditioning duct
Pool noodles
Milk crates
Pine Cones
You may even have some other things that you think would be suitable as well. Families who have their own businesses, please think of us before you throw your rubbish out!

Boarding
Boarding News
Hi to all our boarder families.
The weeks are quickly passing by the weather has started to turn and our students are rugging
up as the temperatures drop. Heaters have been turned on and nights get darker earlier.
Winter is fast approaching.
Sports this week have many students involved - Hockey, Volleyball, Basketball, Fit Lab in the Gym, Cricket, Swimming, and a full day yesterday with Track and Field. We have a few students with sore muscles.
Covid has entered our Boys boarding house- We have 1 student who tested positive on Tuesday morning. Please rest assure that we are following stringent Covid procedures. Our Isolation room is equipped with all a student would need with amenities close by. Nurse Libby visits 3 to 4 time a day keeping a close eye on our sick one and staff are on call. We hope for a speedy recovery.
Last week I had the pleasure of working at the Goondiwindi show. It was great to catch up with boarding staff from many different Boarding schools. Some small, some big. None in my eyes came close to what we give our students here at Concordia. Boutique boarding, Our Duty of Care is outstanding. Our emphasis on student welling being a top priority. Our ability to support student on their educational journey is paramount. We really get to know your children, we understand their individual ways, respect their individuality. Encourage them to be the best they can be. Listen, have a yarn. Rival about sports of all codes. We truly care for them all. We are a family away from Family.
A home away from Home.
Our school has approx. 10% of the school roll as boarders. Our numbers are relatively low however we are in line with schools who have over 1000 pupils with boarder numbers of 100. We are doing just fine. I congratulate all our boarding staff for their efforts and total commitments to our boarding program. We all look forward to growing in numbers over the next couple of years. We have a great marketing team who as committed. Please pass the word around your friends and families. A phone call is all it takes.
Students travelling via plane at the end of term will be travelling on Thursday 15 June and returning on travel day Monday 10 July. We did request travel on the Friday however due to unforeseen cancellations travel is done on a Thursday. This has reduced the time absent from school by 3 days.
It is a win for our students and a win for you all.
Till next week take care and stay safe – Enjoy our photo gallery.
