The Week Ahead - Term 2, Week 6
Monday 22 May 2023 to Friday 26 May 2023
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Week 5 has come and gone and with it the halfway mark for Term 2 already! The wet weather at the start of the week has kept us on our toes ducking and diving to stay dry only to be followed by some beautiful Autumn days. We Will Rock You the Musical is finally here! The first night of the Musical has gone off with a bang and I can only encourage you to get a ticket for either tonight or one of Saturday’s performances if you haven’t already done so. The talent on display is outstanding and a reflection of the months of hard work which has gone into the 2023 Musical. Congratulations, well done and thank you to everyone who has made this College event such a memorable occasion.
The upcoming College Musical as well as the work done with our students in readiness for the Toowoomba Eisteddfod have been an opportunity to reflect on why the Arts are so important in our Kindergarten – Year 12 setting. Enjoyment of Arts programs fosters student engagement in school. This has been evident in the commitment required of the Musical cast, crew and staff over the past 6 months. It was also clear at last term’s Autumn Leaves Concert and the growth of student numbers in our Instrumental Music Program.
Author Elliott Seif makes the case for a strong Arts program in K-12 schools and presents the following 10 reasons:
· The Arts can instil a growth mindset and other positive attitudes and behaviours.
· The Arts help students develop skills that carry over to other subjects, including observation, perspective-taking, interpretation, analysis, and synthesis.
· The Arts enhance creativity and creative thinking.
· As students read musical notes, play an instrument, learn dance steps, create a painting, act in a drama, or interpret a script, they learn new concepts, vocabulary, and literacy skills.
· The Arts help students learn mathematics skills, including measurement, patterns, manipulating numbers, spatial and geometric relationships, and proportional reasoning.
· The Arts can broaden and enrich learning in history, literature and STEM subjects.
· An Arts education helps students discover and develop talents, interests, hobbies, and careers.
· The Arts develop teamwork, collaboration and an understanding of differences.
· Aesthetic learning is important in its own right. “The power of the Arts,” says Seif, “is in their wondrous ability to give us joy, help us understand tragedy, promote empathy and make the written word come alive. They help students examine conflict, power, emotion, and life itself.”
Arts programs can make a big difference in the life of every child and every student should have the opportunity to participate in a strong, multidimensional Arts program throughout their educational experience. The Arts can have a powerful impact on children and learning and they can make a significant difference in our students’ lives. I would like to thank our Arts staff for their commitment, support and hard work to make sure the Arts are a significant and meaningful part of the Concordia Program.
Thank you to the many student and parent volunteers as well as the staff who volunteered at last Saturday’s Park Run at Queens Park. Well done to all the students who have participated in and represented Concordia at numerous sports events and competitions over the past week. Good luck to our u15 Girls’ Netball Team as they prepare for the QCIS Tournament next week on Friday. It’s affirming to see and hear about our many achievements around Toowoomba. Thank you to all the coaches, staff and parents who continue to support and commit to these events.
Have a safe weekend.
Yours in Christ.

Year 6 Drum Group Debut Performance
The Year 6 Drum Group had their debut performance on Friday May 12 where they performed five pieces for the entire combined Junior Campuses in the Senior School Chapel. This group is a cross-campus co-curricular ensemble that formed this year and rehearses afterschool every week. They drummed up a storm and should be immensely proud of their efforts. What a show!

JC Reading Challenge 2023
JC Book Fair
JC Library News
This term we are having a Junior College House Reading Challenge. You may have noticed that your child has brought home a template for a book review or a Lego character template. Please encourage them to fill in this sheet to the best of their ability. There is no limit to how many each student is allowed to submit. I am giving away 6 x $10 gift vouchers at each campus to spend at the Scholastic Book Fair to the best efforts I receive next week.
The countdown is on to the Scholastic Book Fair and National Simultaneous Storytime. Next week, the products will all be arriving and the students will have an opportunity to browse the selection and fill in a wish list to take home and discuss with their families. An invitation will also be sent home with all students as a reminder of the days and times the fair is open at each campus. The support for this event last year was amazing so I am looking forward to seeing how successful our annual Book Fair is this year.

JC Uniforms
Please ensure that you name any pieces of uniform so that it can be returned to the student.
As the weather begins to cool and the leaves change colour, schools across the country begin the process of transitioning from their summer to winter uniform. The changeover to winter uniform can bring a sense of excitement and anticipation as students get to experiment with new outfits and styles. It can also be a challenge for families who may need to invest in new pieces of clothing to ensure their child is properly dressed for the colder weather. Despite these challenges, the changeover to winter uniform is an important annual tradition that helps students prepare for the upcoming season and creates a sense of community and unity within the school.
This time presents a great opportunity to review our uniform guide. A few points to note that have been conservations on recent assembly or in classrooms are…
· Monday is our formal uniform day regardless of weather unless notified by College.
· Sport shoes are navy or white and worn only with sport uniform.
· Layering under uniform is fine as long as we can’t see it.
· Woollen jumper is worn with formal uniform or with sport under the jacket.

Boarding
Boarding News
Hi to all our boarder families.
Today marks the end of Week 5. Our boarders are starting to get niggly and tired. The weather is not lifting their spirits. They are all looking forward to going home for the holidays.
Covid has again revisited the Boys dorms. We have 3 students who are in our Isolation units being cared for by Nurse Libby and the Boarding team. I know during times like this all parents get a little anxious and worried. Please be rest assured we are looking after the students. Contact can be made directly with your child also Andrew and I are available to take calls if you have any concerns.
I have attached the Boarder Handbook link for you so that you can revisit our expectations around leave.
Leave is to be in by Wednesday Midnight. This gives us time to enter the leave into Reach if you are unable to Log on. For those who are currently able to log into Reach you are all doing a great job. Thankyou.
We understand that there will be times when this will not be possible, and a call can be made to your child’s houseparent to arrange the leave.
Our Kitchen staff are doing an excellent job in preparing lovely meals for students but of late many students are going to the Dining Room and do not eat. This is becoming a huge concern for us. We have a duty of care to ensure students are eating nutritious food. Many students are filling up on fast foods, toast, and noodles. Please encourage your child to eat the meals that have been prepared for them as they would if they were at home.
This week we have students playing Netball, Volleyball, League, Rugby Union, Track and Field, Basketball and Swimming - Where do they get their energy from? They all definitely require a nutritious meal at the end of the day. We thank you in advance for supporting us.
We are all looking forward to watching the musical production and are all really proud of George and Henry for their contributions.
Till next week take care and stay safe – Enjoy our photo gallery.
