Coronavirus update for schools
A few parents have asked the College about our plans regarding the Coronavirus situation that is evident worldwide. We follow and act upon the Commonwealth Government guidelines and advice, as passed onto us through Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) and Lutheran Education Queensland (LEQ). Any changes to the advice will be passed to parents/guardians and staff, if and when such changes become available. Our Leadership Team meets regularly, and our current discussions are around planning for scenarios, should there be a need in the future to act as directed by the relevant authorities.
In the meantime, parents and guardians are encouraged to remind their sons and daughters about personal hygiene e.g. washing of hands. As a school, we will be bringing this matter to the attention of all students over the coming weeks.
Parents and extended families should be aware of the current and changing restrictions and guidelines as they apply to overseas travel. These can be accessed through the .
Staffing update
It is with sadness that I let you know that Mr Gavin Lindenmayer has stepped down from the role as Business Manager of the College. Mr Lindenmayer has served this community well in roles as College Council member, College Council Chair and Business Manager throughout the past decade. I wish him well and I pass on our deep gratitude and thanks for the pivotal role that he has played in the development of the College over the past decade.
Ms Charada Grimes will be finishing her tenure and valuable work in support of our Indigenous students. Ms. Grimes has received a scholarship to return to full-time study and I wish her well and thank her for the role that she has played with our students in the past three years.
Kindest regards and blessings

CLC Junior College Classroom Management Process
Lutheran schools have for the past 10+ years used the Restorative Practices approach to supporting student behaviour both in the classroom and school as a whole. Margaret Thorsborne is a specialist in this area and all of our staff have been trained by her or one of her associates in Restorative practices. She states, âRestorative practice is a proven approach to discipline in schools that favours relationships over retribution, and has been shown to improve behaviour and enhance teaching and learning outcomes.â If you would like to know more about Restorative practices please refer to .
In a nutshell, these are the steps we go through when a situation or incident arises.
- Staff are notified by preferably the student/s but sometimes the parents.
- Staff talk to the student/s involved in the situation or incident. The initial aim is to get the WHOLE story. Having the whole story is important as it will usually change the outcome considerably.
- They ask questions such as -

Our Restorative Chats are very powerful in that it teaches the students to take ownership for both owning their behaviour, apologising for their behaviour and then ensuring that they fix it up so that this does not continue to happen. The question is, what happens if it does continue to happen … that is where our comes into action.
If you ever have any questions about the behaviour of your child or to your child, or the processes we go through to address these incidences, we are more than happy to talk with you. Start by making an appointment to talk with your childâs teacher. When home and school support each other, we can achieve amazing things.

From the Director of Campus
As I sat this week and scrolled through our class Seesaw pages, I was again amazed at the work being done each day in the classrooms at WSC. As parents, it is wonderful for you to be able to view these posts on a daily basis and to see the progress that the children are making in their learning. Your comments on these posts have a huge impact on the students as they are always proud to show off their achievements. These posts also enable you to talk to your children about their day at school and to be active participants in their learning journey.
Teachers and students love you commenting on Seesaw posts, but please be mindful that if you would like to communicate with the teachers about things happening at school, email is the most appropriate form of communication. I look forward to continuing to follow our Seesaw posts for the remainder of the year.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution â Industry 4.0
Iâm not sure how many of you will have heard the news that we are now in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The first - harnessing steam and water power, second - electricity and production lines and the third â computerisation and the digital revolution. What we are experiencing today is the fourth, the exponential growth of the âInternet of Thingsâ and the âInternet of Systemsâ. This is having a profound impact on the proliferation of knowledge. According to Shane Parish, 50% of the knowledge that a graduate engineer begins their career with will be superseded within 2.5 to 5 years. I find this quite extraordinary.
"Instead of teaching people how they must work, education will have to evolve into teaching people how to keep discovering new ways to work and adapt to a rapidly and continually changing environment. Instead of teaching what their students should know, educators will have to teach them how to learn, unlearn and relearn to align to the situation. Individuals will need to continually replace out-of-date knowledge with new knowledge in a continuous process of unlearning and learning.
"The Illiterate of the 21st-century Organisations will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."- Alvin Toffler
Organisations will not be looking for individuals that have specific skills and or knowledge sets, but rather for those that can adapt, learn and grow. This is a different profile to the students the schools and education factories of today are producing.â â Papegaaij B, Youens. K. (2020)
In the most recent Independent Schools Queensland briefing, Mark Newman (Director of School Improvement and Performance) discussed the rise of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) and the opportunities that it provides for learners, teachers and processes/systems. For us on Stephen Street Campus, we are already seeing the benefits of Learner-facing AIEd. Most recently in our Maths classes, our Middle College students are able to access a highly tailored individual curriculum on a fortnightly basis thanks to AIEd. As a Maths teacher, I can see in real time how each of my students are tracking, where there are gaps in their knowledge and then teach to that specific gap. The results for our students, based on last semesterâs trial… incredible!
So why am I talking about this? In short, this is the world that we are working in as adults and the world our young people will step into. Education has changed but needs to change faster as up until this point, change has been reasonably incremental. Twenty-six years ago, as a young technology teacher in Brisbane, I have seen the full evolution â from chalk board technical drawings, pencils and talcum powder, tracing paper and ink to 3D printed Maths equations, laser cut components for Technology Studies projects and Year 9 students using computational fluid dynamics software to test F1 car designs.
Our strategic plan states that we will develop an âalternate, progressive and future focused full year program at Year 9.â (For those who are getting their hopes up, we arenât considering sending them off for a year!) Since August last year we have been gathering examples of schools that are already doing amazing education in this space. Tuesday saw our first Teacher Forum dedicated to the task of beginning to scope out what it will look like at Concordia and although it is early days, it is fair to say that as a staff we are excited and that there are exciting times ahead for our Year 9 students in 2021!
We will be looking for parents who are interested in being involved in shaping the contexts that students will be exploring and in providing high level mentoring for staff and students throughout the year, as we seek to equip Industry 4.0 natives with . I look forward to sharing more as the yearâs program develops.
Have a great weekend.

Director of Campus
Canteen Closure
Please note, due to events happening, the canteen will be closed from Wednesday 18 March to Friday 20 March.
Excavate the Chocolate Chips from a Cookie!
The Year 7 students in History this term have been learning about the varied techniques used by Archaeologists and that Archaeological excavations are a destructive process.
This week they had the opportunity to experience what being an Archaeologist would feel like during an excavation activity involving a chocolate chip cookie where the chocolate chips serve as the artefacts while the cookie serves as the archaeological site.
After participating in the activity, many of the students understood why it is important to be careful while excavating fragile artefacts, that an archaeological excavation destroys a site, and why recording the location of artefacts, detailed note taking, drawings and taking photographs is crucial to preserving archaeological knowledge.
When reflecting about the task, several students made the comment about how Archaeologists must be neat, precise, patient and need to take a lot of care when excavating a site to ensure that the artefacts arenât damaged, (like many of the chocolate chips had been) throughout the process.

FAULTY TOWERS â THE DINING EXPERIENCE
… A fun filled 2 hour professional interactive theatre show with a 3 course dinner.
Join us for our major fundraising for the year on Friday 22 May in the Concordia Function Centre. (Ticket prices will increase at the end of Term 1).
When the audience become diners in the âFaulty Towersâ restaurant, pretty much anything can happen â because 70% of the show is improvised. The fun starts as guests wait to be seated. It then hurtles along in a 2-hour tour de force of gags and shambolic service as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a '70s-style 3-course meal together with a good dollop of mayhem. Expect the unexpected!
Internationally acclaimed, the show was born in April 1997 as a loving tribute to the BBCâs much-loved TV series. Over a million people around the world have seen it since.
As of 2020, 12 teams of cast working from England and Australia tour around 20 countries a year. The show is also into its ninth year in Londonâs West End, where it holds TripAdvisorâs Certificate of Excellence. (Interactive Theatre International â UK and Australia).
