The Week Ahead - Term 1, Week 8
Monday 16 March to Friday 20 March 2020
From the Head of College
Coronavirus Update for Schools
As we enter different phases of this global pandemic, there are some important facts that I bring to the attention of all parents and guardians:
- We are taking advice from the various Government agencies, Independent Schools Queensland and Lutheran Education Queensland, and we will only act in consultation with the relevant Government agencies.
- Parents and guardians will be informed of any developments via SMS, Email, Concordia App and ‘The Week Ahead’. No other avenues will be used except in the case of an emergency – information to parents will be disseminated from the office of the Head of College only.
- Seasonal influenza messages and general advice will be conveyed to parents and staff through ‘The Week Ahead’ as per our normal procedure.
- Staff have been issued with hand sanitiser to be used by students within all classrooms at the Junior College. At the Stephen Street Campus, hand sanitising units are located in a variety of locations around the Campus. We have conducted an audit and further units are being supplied to staff at that Campus as a way of adding to our existing sanitiser units.
- Our general cleaning program is audited to ensure that a high level of cleanliness is maintained across the College.
- If parents and guardians or close family members are travelling overseas in the coming holidays, then you should consult for current advice.
- We do not have cases of Coronavirus in the College.
In the meantime, here are some important reminders:
- Promote basic hygiene measures with your children with an emphasis on information about the importance of hand hygiene (more information is available at ).
- Handwashing should be a twenty second exercise (or x2 rounds of Happy Birthday!).
- Educate your children about covering their cough with a tissue or their inner elbow to prevent the spread of germs. Ensure careful disposal of used tissues.
As a precaution, we will be reviewing additional public events that have been scheduled for the remainder of the term. A decision by the Emergency Management Team will be taken in the coming days regarding the possible postponement of such events, and the decision relayed to parents and general community members. Again, I emphasise any decision to postpone any event is simply precautionary.
We do not know what changes to school operations may occur in the weeks ahead. While there was a news item yesterday about possible school closures across the nation, we have not been informed of any such action. As a precaution, we will prepare as best we can for such an eventuation; however, I emphasise that this has not been raised by any approved authority as an action to be taken by schools in Queensland.
Please continue to watch our official communication avenues for updates as they become available.
Staffing Update
Mr Lindsay Bovill has been appointed to the position of Acting Business Manager. He will be supported by Lutheran Education Queensland as an interim measure, and until such time as we are in a position to advertise and find a permanent Business Manager to take up this important role.
Mr Bovill comes to us with enormous experience, having been the General Manager at St Peters Lutheran College Brisbane, and Business Manager at a number of schools including Luther College Melbourne and The Glennie School. He currently holds several Board positions around Australia and we welcome his expertise to Â鶹´«Ã½.
Kindest regards and blessings

New Sports Uniforms 2020
This term, our Junior College AFL and Touch teams have been decked out in the new Â鶹´«Ã½ uniforms for these sports. The students are loving the new strip and have been sporting the colours proudly at recent fixtures for Friday sport at various venues, with some great comments from the wider community.
Well done to all involved with this initiative and support of our Junior College sporting programs.

Representative Swimming News
Congratulations to all our Junior College swimmers representing the Toowoomba Central Zone District, for their efforts in the pool at the Darling Downs Swimming Trials held at Gatton recently. It was great to see our swimmers give their best in all events and representing their school and themselves so proudly. Thank you to the parents for their support on this day.
Students who competed were Ava Hopper, Arabella Knopke, Meg Osborne, Sofie Osborne, James Rice, Casey Rickert, Holly Vaughan and Michael Vicary-Rojas. A special mention and congratulations to Meg Osborne on gaining Darling Downs selection to compete at the State Championship next month. Meg also broke two records in Butterfly at the Darling Downs meet, while a number of students can count themselves unlucky by missing out by the narrowest of margins in qualifying. We wish Meg the best at this next level.
Next Monday, selected Concordia students (9 years old to Opens), will be participating in the annual Queensland Combined Independent Schools (QCIS) Swimming Carnival at the Milne Bay Pool. Good luck to all involved!

From the Director
One of my highlights each week is to scroll through all of the classroom Seesaw accounts to see the amazing work that is done by the students and their teachers. The learning that is occurring is remarkable and we love that we have the platform to be able to share this with you.
As parents, it is wonderful for you to be able to view these posts on a regular basis and to see the progress that your children are making in their learning. Your comments on these posts have a huge impact on the students as they are always proud to show off their achievements. These posts also enable you to talk to your children about their day at school and to be active participants in their learning journey.
Teachers and students love you counting on Seesaw posts, but please be mindful that if you would like to communicate with the teachers about things happening at school, email is the most appropriate form of communication. I look forward to continuing to follow our Seesaw posts. Happy Learning!

As we are nearing the end of Term 1, we are already beginning to celebrate the achievements of our WSC students both inside and outside the classroom. Congratulations must go to all of our participants in the Inter-House Cross Country this week. It was a great morning of team spirit from not only the students but also our parents. OPEN DAY SAUSAGE SIZZLE
We are cooking up yet another storm on the barbecue on Saturday 21 March at Open Day. This is even more relaxed than Bunnings (so more time to have more fun) and we get to meet and chat with prospective new families and students to share our wonderful experience as Concordian families.
Due to the timing of Open Day, we don’t need as many volunteers to help us out, but we do appreciate any spare time given from our community. We would appreciate helpers from 8.30am to set-up and with Open Day running from 9.30am to 12.30pm, we should be completely wrapped up by 1.30pm. If you are able to assist, where you can select your preferred time.
We will be operating from the Quad and students from the Stephen Street Campus are more than welcome to help out on the day.
All volunteers must wear FULLY ENCLOSED FOOTWEAR, due to Workplace Health and Safety.
We look forward to seeing you there.
FAULTY TOWERS – THE DINING EXPERIENCE…
A fun filled two hour professional interactive theatre show with a three-course dinner.
Join us for our major fundraising event for the year on Friday 22 May at 7pm in the Concordia Function Centre to enjoy a dining experience you will never forget!
For those of you are familiar with the iconic TV series, ‘Fawlty Towers’, this is performed by actors who travel the world replicating the restaurant section of the hotel based in Torquay, which is run by Basil and Sybil Fawlty and supported by the non-English speaking Spanish waiter Manuel… who always tries his best, but tends to get into serious trouble. It is two hours of laughter, mayhem and serious fun. And of the two hour performance, only 20 minutes of the show is professionally scripted and the remaining time is off-the cuff and based entirely on interaction with the dinner guests in attendance on the night.
, which are now on sale! (Early Bird ticket prices are only available until Friday 3 April).
You can book from one ticket upwards and if you wish to be seated with a particular friend, please note that in the ‘Dietary Requirements’ Section (eg. Please seat with the ‘Smiths’).
Tickets for this event are limited due to the style of the performance and acting requirement, the performance company has capped the number of guests.
When the audience become diners in the ‘Faulty Towers’ restaurant, pretty much anything can happen – because 70% of the show is improvised. The fun starts as guests wait to be seated. It then hurtles along in a 2-hour tour de force of gags and shambolic service as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a '70s-style 3-course meal together with a good dollop of mayhem. Expect the unexpected!
Internationally acclaimed, the show was born in April 1997 as a loving tribute to the BBC’s much-loved TV series. Over a million people around the world have seen it since.
As of 2020, 12 teams of cast working from England and Australia tour around 20 countries a year. The show is also into its ninth year in London’s West End, where it holds TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence. (Interactive Theatre International – UK and Australia).
HOMESTYLE BAKE ORDERS
Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser. Orders will be available for collection on Friday 20 March between 2pm and 4pm in the Norfolk Room or during Open Day on Saturday 21 March. Visit us at the barbecue in the Quad to collect your order.
AND LAST BUT BY NO MEANS LEAST...
I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the fabulous people who came down to Bunnings last Saturday and volunteered their time to help us on the day. Whether it was just to help set-up or break-down, or cooking, serving and chatting to customers, it was wonderful to have you there. I really value your time and truly appreciate you and your family for allowing us to have a piece of you for that small period. It is because of the amazing help and support we, as a P&F, have from the family community at our wonderful school that we are able to achieve what we do. So once again, thank you very much.

The Concordia 7/8 Boys Futsal team have made it to the Grand Final of the Downlands College Futsal Competition after a stellar season where they went undefeated throughout their five games, scoring 45 goals in the process.
The game will be held at the Downlands Gym with kick off at 5.50pm on Tuesday 17 March. It would be wonderful to have as many supporters there as possible to cheer on the boys as they go for the title against Downlands.

Crikey! What a Day we had at Australia Zoo
Boarding students and staff set off at 7.30am on Sunday morning to visit Australia Zoo. Everyone had a great day, riding the train, walking in and out of areas which were well populated with many wonderful animals, birds and reptiles. Thank you to the Kitchen staff for a great lunch.
The Crocs were a great drawcard and the beautiful tropical parrots flying in and around the spectators was a real buzz. Students enjoyed the freedom and relaxed atmosphere. A big shout out to Mr Barrie and Miss Libby for supporting us on this excursion.
