The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 7
Monday August 21 - Friday August 25
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we head into the second half of Term 3, Concordia remains a hive of activity. Excursions, incursions, numerous sporting fixtures, camps and exams remain the order of the day. Please remember to check the College Calendar, College App, emails and the weekly newsletter to stay on top of organising your weekly schedule. Next week will see the College focus on the importance of reading, from a young age, as we celebrate Book Week across the College. I sometimes get asked about a gift idea for a child and I will without hesitation say that buying a book for a child is one of the best gifts for them. Thank you to Mrs. Heidi Edwards, on the Senior College Campus, and all the staff at the Junior College for the planning and detailed work done behind the scenes to make the various activities, competitions and events associated with Book Week possible.
Our Year 12 students are now mid-way through their Mock Exam Block and from all accounts they have stepped up to the mark and are applying themselves incredibly well in this process. Thank you to Mr. Gabe Robbie, who heads the Quality Assurance Team at the Senior College, and his team of helpers for the work done in ensuring that this process runs as smooth as clockwork.
Next week our Year 11 students will present their leadership speeches to their peers and staff as they prepare to step up as our senior cohort and College leaders for 2024. Good luck to all the nominees and thank you as parents and caregivers for your support and encouragement of your student in this process. Our Year 5 students will also attend these nomination speeches at Stephen Street as they begin to consider and prepare for their role as the leaders and senior cohort at our Junior College in 2024. Thank you to our Year 10 parent body and students for being so well prepared for the Year 10 Set Plan Interviews for 2024 which have now been completed. The past fortnight has seen our 2024 Prep students attend their Prepping for Prep Program as well as the Year 6 students attend the first of the 2024 Year 7 Transition Events.
With you, our goal and aim are to scaffold as well as exposing our students to many varied life experiences which we hope will stand them in good stead for their future. Reflecting on the various “rites of passage” events currently happening across both the Junior and Senior College, has prompted me to share with you a letter written by a teenager to their parents which provides great insight into their world as well giving us, as the adults, some great advice and tips.
Dear Mum and Dad
Please stick with me
I can’t think clearly right now because there is a substantial section of my prefrontal cortex missing. It’s a fairly important chunk, something having to do with rational thought. You see, it won’t be fully developed until I’m about 25, and from where I sit, 25 is still a long way off. But here’s what I want my parents to know.
My brain is not yet fully developed. It doesn’t matter that I’m smart, even a perfect score on my maths test doesn’t insulate me from the normal developmental stages that we all go through.
Judgement and intelligence are two completely distinct things. And the same thing that makes my brain wonderfully flexible, creative and sponge-like also makes me impulsive. Not necessarily reckless or negligent but more impulsive than what I will be later in life.
Please stick with me.
So, when you look at me like I have ten heads after I have done something “stupid” or failed to do something “smart”, you are not really helping.
You adults respond to situations with your prefrontal cortex [rationally] but I am more inclined to respond with my amygdala [emotionally]. And when you ask, “What were you thinking?” the answer is I wasn’t at least not the way that you are.
You can blame me or blame mother nature, but either way, it is what it is. At this point in my life, I get that you love me, but my friends are my everything.
Please understand that right now I choose my friends, but don’t be fooled, I am watching you. Carefully.
Please stick with me.
Here’s what you can do for me.
Model adulting. I see all the behaviours that you are modelling, and I hear all the words you say. If you keep showing me the way, I will follow even if I detour many, many times before we reach our destination.
Let me figure things out for myself. If you allow me to experience the consequences of my own actions, I will learn from them. The more I do, the more confidence and resilience I will develop.
Tell me about you. I want you to tell me the stories of the crazy things you did as a teen and what you learned from them.
Help me with perspective. Keep reminding me of the big picture. I will roll my eyes at you and make all kinds of grunt-like sounds. I will let you know in no uncertain terms that you can’t possibly understand any of what I am going through. But I am listening. I really am. Help me scan out and focus on the long view. Remind me that this moment will pass.
Keep me safe. Please remind me that drugs and driving don’t mix. Keep telling me that you will bail me out of any dangerous situation, no anger, no lectures, no questions asked. But also let me know over and over that you are there to listen when I need you.
Be kind. I will learn kindness from you and if you are relentless in your kindness to me, someday I will imitate that behaviour.
Show interest in the things I enjoy. Some days I will choose to share those interests with you, and it will make me feel good if you validate those interests, by at least acting interested.
One day when the haze of adolescence lifts, you will find a confident, strong, competent, kind adult where a surly teenager once stood. In the meantime, buckle in for the ride. And…
Please stick with me.
Love.
Your Teenager [Acknowledgement: Helen Wingens]
Enjoy Book Week next week.
Wishing everyone a relaxing weekend.
Yours in Christ.

Master Plan - Frequently asked Questions
Will all the teachers be relocating? Or will you have to make some teachers redundant?
The teachers will be relocating with their students.
What are the benefits for teachers?
The move to one campus will allow for streamlined processes and greater collaboration between teachers. We believe our teachers will feel better supported and resourced by being together on one campus.
CLC Ensembles Concert - News
Last week, the College community gathered to celebrate the culmination of our CLC ensembles 2023 musical journey.
The concert featured our Junior Campus musicians alongside our more established ensembles from Stephen Street. Through countless hours of practice and rehearsals, skills have been honed, challenges embraced and new heights of musical excellence reached. This concert displayed the discipline required to master an instrument and the teamwork needed to perform as an ensemble.
As a small momentum, the College presented each member with a medallion to thank them for sharing their talents and for ensuring the music performance culture at the College remains of the highest standards.
We would like to publicly acknowledge the hours of service from our Year 12 students, Mia Hallaren, Alex Theodosis and Campbell Venz who have collectively, have been involved in ensembles for 24 years! Furthermore, thank you to the tutors, mentors, parents and supporters of the Music Performance program.
JAZZ on the Range News
On Saturday afternoon the College Big Band performed at the Jazz on the Range event hosted by TAS. This event is a fabulous, relaxed afternoon of music, featuring the Cool Nights Big Band plus several bands from local schools in a non-competitive environment. It was a very entertaining afternoon complete with a BBQ and picnic rugs and we appreciate the students representing the College to further hone their craft on a weekend.
Free Flu Vaccines
During spring we see a rise in influenza cases. Never fear, it is not too late to get your first flu vax!
Did you have your flu vaccine in April/May? If so, now is the perfect time for you to have a free top-up.
The influenza vaccine is available free for ALL Queenslanders above 6 months of age until 31 August.
To improve uptake of the flu vaccine among Toowoomba residents, the Darling Downs Public Health Unit will be having a pop-up flu vaccine clinic at Kobi Place, Baillie Henderson Hospital on 19 August 2023 between 8 am and 2 pm.
Ever wondered why your child might need a flu shot...if so, click the link below.
CCTV Cameras installed in Health Centre
As the College continues to monitor and prioritise student wellbeing and safety, we are pleased to let you know that CCTV cameras have now been installed in our Health Centre to ensure that our excellent duty of care in this part of the College is maintained. The necessary signage informing all visitors to the Health Centre of this process has also been included. We would like to acknowledge and thank Nurse Libby Chapman for the outstanding care and support which she brings to this area of College life.
Janome Sewing Machines
As we are constantly striving to promote sustainability and reduce waste, we have an exciting opportunity for all sewing enthusiasts out there!
We currently have three mechanical Janome sewing machines that are in need of refurbishment. These machines, though broken, have great potential to be brought back to life with a little love and attention.
If you are someone who enjoys tinkering with machines or have a passion for refurbishing sewing equipment, this offer is perfect for you. These Janome models, known for their durability and precision, could become valuable additions to your sewing repertoire once repaired.
By taking these broken sewing machines and giving them a second chance, you not only save them from ending up in landfills but also contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
If you are interested in receiving these mechanical Janome models for refurbishment, please contact Heidi Edwards at the Stephen Street Library.”
CLC Book Week
This year's theme is â€Read, grow, inspire,’ which raises some wonderful ideas and imagery:
Who inspires you to read?
Who inspires you to grow?
What have you read that inspires you?
What have you read that makes you grow?
We look forward to seeing what creative costumes our students (and staff!) come up with for book week. It is always an exciting and fun time of the year.
Just remember that book week is about connecting students with books and inspiring enthusiasm and passion for reading. Costumes definitely don’t have to be expensive or complicated! They can be made out of things you find around the house, or from what is already in their wardrobe.
Happy reading!

Darling Downs Regional Track & Field Carnival
On Tuesday 15 August our selected Central Zone athletes competed at the Darling Downs trials at Harristown SHS. This was a culmination of ten weeks of early morning training and afternoon training sessions at both campuses with some great results for our athletes. Several students qualifyed in their events to go to the State Championships. Special mention to our 9 year olds, Ajah Ayii and Thomas Richards who won their respective 800 m events in great fashion.
Congratulations to Andrew Ye, Charlie Lowis, and Arabella Knopke on their selection in the Darling Downs team to compete in October in Brisbane, an amazing achievement. Well done!
Southwest Qld Touch “Swans Cup”
This term our Junior College Touch football teams competed in the “Swans Cup” a fantastic initiative by the Southwest Qld Touch development staff to provide an opportunity for our students to play in a 6-week competition against other schools in the region on a Monday night at the Kearneys Spring Touch complex, improving their skills and learning about the great game. This is the second year we have entered teams in this competition, with the majority of our players experiencing their first taste of this sport against much older competition. There were some very valuable lessons learnt but more importantly some great fun had each week playing with their teammates.
Our students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the experience, proving to be very competitive in each game with our mixed team making it through to the third versus fourth playoff.
Cricket Gala Day
Recently some of our Junior College students competed in the “Woolworths Cricket Blast School Cup” at Queens Park against several other primary schools from around Toowoomba. This competition was aimed at teaching the students the fundamentals of cricket and being inclusive while having a ton of fun along the way. Our team enjoyed the day immensely and are already asking when the next one is scheduled to be involved, with our aim to enter more teams in the future on this day.
A big thank you also to Mr Mathews from SSC who assisted and umpired on the day for our team.

Boarding
Boarding News
Hello to all our Boarding families.
Year 12 Mock exam have commenced this week. Our boarders have been allowed to remain in boarding to study during the day with access to the kitchen and the dining room. Ms Maureen and Mr Andrew are nearby if they require anything. Mr Wally has been a great support as well.
This week I would like to share with you some of the many behind the scenes tasks that we as staff perform on a daily and weekly basis to ensure your child is receiving that extra care we have committed to deliver.
Student Uniform alterations and mending like torn Blazer pockets, Hems down and spilt pants are a regular for Ms Maureen who brings out the sewing machine whenever the need arises.
Andrew is a master at Events planning for student activities that keeps everyone entertained over the weekend.
Sister Libby calls into the dorms every morning and afternoons to check in with all students. Keeping a close eye on any medical concerns and to monitor student wellbeing. This is very reassuring for you as parents and for us as the staff who look after your child.
Garth, our Councillor meets up with boarding staff on a regular basis to keep up to date with student wellbeing. Garth is also available during school times for students if required.
Wally, our First Nations Support Coordinator not only works in the school during the day, but he also supports the Boarding program by working in Temme House 2 days per week. It is great to have Wally around as he is a great conversationist with all the boys, an expert on most sports and makes a good cup pf tea. Always keen for a good yarn.
Our Tutors, Nadir, Alexis, Sera, and Jane offer their services in assisting exam supervision during the day when exam is on and continue to put in extra hours supporting students with last minute submissions of assessments and assignments during and after they have completed shifts.
Tutors Alexis, Nick, and Brittnay works alongside Mrs Heidi the Librarian after school assisting students in the library. Diligently tracking homework progress for all students.
Tutors Sam and Dom displays their cooking abilities with the BBQ and Toasties machine.
All in all, we are the “Concordia Boarding team” who strive to make your child’s boarding experience one to remember.
Until next week
Stay safe and look after each other.
Hope you enjoy the pics.
