The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 6

Monday August 14 - Friday August 18

From the Head of College

From the Head of College

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Boarding has always been and remains an integral part of College life at Concordia. We are fortunate at Concordia to offer a boutique boarding program which allows each of our boarding students to be fully known and fully loved, resulting in a tailor-made experience. All the offerings of a big boarding school are available at Concordia within the confines of our “home away from home” philosophy for these students. Quality pastoral care as well as a balanced approach to the demands of learning and social engagement remain at the forefront of boarding at Concordia.

Embracing the Change

A couple of weeks ago, something very rare happened, something parents of small children may describe as the stuff of fairytales. My husband and I had the opportunity to rewind time and spend the evening like we used to, before children. Our son spent the night with his grandparents, and we spent the night with friends: chatting, laughing, eating pizza, and playing some very competitive Mario Party. We reminisced on the past and, of course, found ourselves talking about our children who we missed, despite enjoying our momentary liberation from responsibility.

Community News

From the Director of Pastoral Care and Wellbeing

The state of youth mental health is a growing concern within our society. Over the past five years, mental health conditions among young people have risen with anxiety, depression and self-harm being the most common challenges. According to the World Health Organization, half of all mental health disorders begin by the age of 14, and three-quarters by the age of 24.

From the Director of Marketing and Enrolments

As we step into the month of August, there is excitement here at 鶹ý. Our major campaign, "See You In September," is in full swing, and we can hardly wait to welcome parents, carers, and potential future members of our Concordia family to experience the magic of learning at our institution. Spread across the dates of September 11 to 15, this initiative promises to be a delightful showcase of the vibrant learning environment that defines Concordia.

Master Plan - Frequently asked Questions

Will all the teachers be relocating? Or will you have to make some teachers redundant?

The teachers will be relocating with their students.

What are the benefits for teachers?

The move to one campus will allow for streamlined processes and greater collaboration between teachers. We believe our teachers will feel better supported and resourced by being together on one campus.

School App - Upgrade

On Monday August 14th, our school app will be upgraded to support GA4. Please ensure that you download the new version of the App when prompted in order to keep receiving important notifications from 鶹ý.

For Android users, we’ll notify parents that there is a new version of the app to download, which they’ll be required to download and open in order for push notifications to continue to work.

For Apple users, there will be no impact to push notifications. We’ll notify these parents that there is a new version of the app to download.

CLC Book Week

This year's theme is ‘Read, grow, inspire,’ which raises some wonderful ideas and imagery:

Who inspires you to read?

Who inspires you to grow?

What have you read that inspires you?

What have you read that makes you grow?

We look forward to seeing what creative costumes our students (and staff!) come up with for book week. It is always an exciting and fun time of the year.

Just remember that book week is about connecting students with books and inspiring enthusiasm and passion for reading. Costumes definitely don’t have to be expensive or complicated! They can be made out of things you find around the house, or from what is already in their wardrobe.

Happy reading!

JAZZ on the Range

Please see the flyer for more information regarding the JAZZ on the Range event this Saturday, August 12.

Overdue Books - Library

Do your students have any overdue books?  We don't bill for outstanding books until the end of the term, but this is a reminder to follow up on any that may be overdue from the first half of term 3.

For Junior campus students, please encourage your student to have a chat with library staff. Stephen street students will receive overdue emails from our library software (Access-it), or they can come and have a chat with me in the library about what is overdue. If the library is closed, there is a returns bin outside of the door. Alternatively. books can be returned to student reception. (Stephen street only)

National Tree Day

Toowoomba Regional Council will be undertaking their National Tree Day planting event on 7th October 2023. New trees and shrubs will be planted out across two Toowoomba Region parks, as part of an initiative to increase the region’s urban forest population. This event is in partnership between Toowoomba Regional Council and Planet Ark’s National Tree Day, with Council holding this event later in the year to avoid frost damage to newly planted trees. - See flyer for more details.

Toowoomba Eisteddfod News

Instrumental and Speech & Drama

Congratulations to all the Concordia students who participated in the Instrumental and Speech & Drama sections of the Toowoomba eisteddfod. There is so much talent at the College and we are super proud of their courage to share their talents in a competitive and public environment.

Congratulations to the following students:

Ethan Cawthorne, Seth Johansen, Lucia Totenhofer, Elaine Thien, Hannah Coleborn.

The following students also received awards (some across multiple sections) from their performances in their areas (1st, 2nd, 3rd or Highly Commended).

Sam Lawrence, Lily Pietsch, Zoe Pietsch, Malakai Bell, Sebastian Millet, Lennox Saggers, Sonya Thien, Evie Prince, Ralph Beadle, Sarah Peake and Levi Johansen.

The Last Daughter - Special Screening

The last daughter tells the story of Brenda Matthews, an indigenous woman, removed from her indigenous and later her white family.

It is powerful story reflecting on the experiences of indigenous people of our land and told with reconciliation and coming together in mind.

We have been able secure the rights to show this movie in our community and you are invited to join us for this special viewing in the Lecture theatre at Stephen St campus on Thursday 17/8 at 6 pm. Nibbles and drinks are on offer beforehand form 5.30pm outside the lecture theatre with some beer and wine available for purchase.

This is an initiative of the Rap group (reconciliation action group) that seeks to help our community to grow in understanding and coming together of indigenous and non-indigenous citizens of our amazing country.

Come along to learn and build our Concordia community. Please register

Stephen Street Campus

From the Director of Campus

My goodness, it’s term hump week – how did that happen! The frenetic pace of things at Concordia never ceases to amaze me. On Wednesday evening, Mr Prinsloo and I attended a “Last 100 Days” event at St Marys College with our College and Boarding Captains. The guest speaker, who was a former St Marys College Captain, spoke to the seniors about how their time finishing the year will feel stagnant, but once they get to the other end, they will be shocked at how quickly their life has changed. Welcome to adulthood! We wish our seniors all the best as they enter this exciting while nerve racking period ahead.

Senior College - Parent Connect - Meeting

Our next Parent Connect meeting will be on Monday, August 14 at 6.30pm in the Norfolk Room at Stephen Street Campus. We look forward to seeing you there.

Library News

Homework time in library after school:

Monday to Thursday 3.30-4.30

This is a time for SSC students to be working on assignments, catching up on homework or getting help from out resident tutors or teachers.

The expectation for this time is that if they are in the library, they are working on their schoolwork. If they are not working on homework, they should be waiting for their ride in front of the CSI building.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Boarding News

Greetings to everyone

Well, we have hit the halfway mark, this term is probably our longest term, and all students are feeling it. Whilst the weather has been pleasant our days seem long, with the fantastic involvement of boarders in school sporting events our students are feeling tired. A good tired, they have pushed themselves and have shown grit and commitment.

Welcome from the Leadership Team
