The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 2
Monday 19 July to Friday 23 July 2021
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
What a privilege it is for me to be addressing you for the first time as the new Head of College. I am humbly and courageously looking forward to working with and for you as this next season, in this the 75th Anniversary year of our wonderful College, begins. Thank you for the many warm greetings and words of encouragement which have been shared with me already.
I need to begin by acknowledging my predecessor Adrian Wiles and the College’s Leadership Team who so generously shared their time, knowledge and insights with me during my visit in Week 8 last term. This has certainly allowed for a very smooth and informed transition for me. What has stood out for me about Concordia is its strong sense of community, great pastoral care where every student is known, a culture of rich academic rigour underpinned by a philosophy of learning to learn and a mindset of it’s okay to make mistakes. Here is a great sense of a student-focused and Christ-centred community.
I am excited by the wonderful opportunities ahead to help grow the highly regarded reputation, opportunities and initiatives already in place at Concordia. What excites me is the wonderful passion and energy from the staff here to ensure that every decision made will ensure that better outcomes are achieved for every student who has been entrusted into our care.
As the new custodian of the College’s vision, I will bring with me a strong contemporary learning philosophy where we acknowledge the different learning styles which make up our learners, as well as focusing on the processes of learning rather than just the product. Sacred cows will be challenged as new needs call for new solutions and I ask for your support, courage and a team effort as we embark on this journey.
As part of a transparent working relationship with every family, I propagate a strong open-door policy, and this is also extended by every member of the Leadership Team. I am looking forward to growing these relationships with you built on open communication [and yes, these conversations may be hard at times], transparency, mutual respect and trust.
I look forward to meeting you over the coming weeks and wish every family the very best for what will be a busy term at 鶹ý.
In His Service.
Mr Anton Prinsloo
Head of College
From the College Pastor
Hello Concordia!
My name is Thomas Böhmert and I am your new College Pastor. I have come from St Peters Lutheran College in Indooroopilly, where I served as the Senior pastor for the last six plus years. Previously, I have served in a variety of school and parish contexts in South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the NT (where I served the Arrarnta congregations in and around Hermannsburg). My wife Lyn is originally from Toowoomba and attended Concordia for some of her schooling, so I feel I already have a connection with this community.
Our daughter Natasha has just finished her exercise physiology degree at UQ and has found work and a shared flat in Brisbane. You probably gathered from the funny dots over my family name that I originally come from Germany, where I spent the first 21 years of my life, mostly in the city of Dresden, where my parents and sister and family still reside.
I am certainly looking forward to get to know you and work with you, and I hope and pray that I will be able to make a positive contribution to Concordia keeping you connected with the source of our hope and vision, Jesus Christ. It will take a while to get to know all of you and how everything works here. But there is a supportive team around me who have already made me very welcome.
Please say hello, if you see me wandering around the various campuses or come and call in at the Open Door, where my office is located.
I am looking forward to sharing a little of your journey in the coming months and years. May our Lord bless and guide you always.

The students will be experimenting, creating and exploring the mechanical, Australian Gothic birds and narrative construction through illustration and writing. Not only will this be a unique opportunity for our students to work with a celebrated arts professional, it will give them problem solving and creativity skills which will assist them in many aspects of the curriculum, not only English and Visual Art.

Koojarewon Pre Visit - Year 3
We are very conscious that our Year 3 students have another ‘first’ in Term 3… it is their first school overnight camping experience.
While this is a little stressful for some students, it is majorly stressful for many parents. To assist both students and parents in this ‘first’, Koojarewon offer an opportunity for an optional pre-visit. This is a great opportunity for you to come out to the camp grounds and check out all of the facilities including the dorms, kitchen and dining hall and the overall camp environment. Camp staff will be there to field any questions from students and parents. The Year 3 teachers will also be there too.
If you are feeling a little unsettled about the upcoming camp, or would just like to come and check it out, feel free to come along on Monday 26 July between 3.30pm to 5pm. Address for Google Maps: Koojarewon Youth Camp, Borghardt Road Highfields.
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week always falls in our school holidays, but we had a belated celebration at our Junior College this week. The theme of NAIDOC for 2021 was ‘Healing Country’ and both JC campuses recognised this at a special Assembly this week. During these assemblies, Mr David Heuschele played his didgeridoo for us and Pastor Thomas Böhmert spoke at our Hume Street Campus. It is wonderful having a College Pastor back with us again.
Mr Trappett and Mr Heuschele then celebrated NAIDOC Week in Art lessons via Indigenous chalk drawings. Now would be a great time to join the 鶹ý Official Facebook group to see and share the video of the students' amazing work.

From the Director
Welcome to Term 3. From all accounts, everyone has had a restful and safe break, and ready to return to extend our knowledge more. We would love to welcome two new students to our Campus, Malachy in Prep and Skylar in Year 2. We hope they settle in well and enjoy being a part of our beautiful community. We have also welcomed a few new staff members.
Year 4 Teacher – Mr Matt Barnes
It was with sadness that Miss Alissa Turner finished her employment with the College shortly after the end of Term 2. She has gained employment with the Queensland Education Department. We would like to acknowledge Alissa’s time with us and wish her all the best in her teaching career.
We were very fortunate to be able to engage Mr Matthew Barnes for the remainder of the year. Matt has worked as a disability support worker for 10 years before seeing the light and deciding to become a teacher. While studying, Matt also worked as a teaching assistant. We are very excited that Matt’s background will add to his depth of knowledge and understanding as a teacher. He is co-teaching with Mrs Sally Weir in Years 3 and 4.
New Teaching Assistant – Mr Sue Priest
Mrs Sue Priest is our new Teaching Assistant who will be working with the MultiLit and Reading Tutor programs. Sue is no relation to me but what a top name! She has a wealth of experience in schools as well as working with NDIS.
New Library Coordinator – Mrs Karen Maben
We are looking forward to welcoming Mrs Karen Maben to joining the Junior College at the beginning of Term 3. Karen has extensive experience working in school libraries and brings with her a wealth of ideas that will be implemented over time. One of our first initiatives is that we are going to operate the library on a Thursday morning from 7.30am for parents who would like to come and enjoy a time with their child/ren reading or spending time in the library. Grab a coffee and curl up with a book for a little while before the start of the day.

This term we welcome Mrs Karen Maben to our Junior College as our new Library Assistant. Karen comes to Concordia with many years of Library experience and has a lot of new, exciting ideas to share. So that you can be part of what happens in the Library, we will now be opening the Library at WSC at 7.30am every Tuesday morning. This week we welcomed the news that flashing school zone signs will be installed outside our campus on Warwick Street in 2022. The installation of these flashing signs will improve visibility of the school zone and serve as an active reminder for motorists to slow down.
Our WSC teachers have been busily preparing for a fun and exciting Term 3, and we look forward to sharing this with you each week.

“Listen to this [insert name]: Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God.” Job 37:14
Welcome back to the start of our new semester. I never grow tired of the feeling of the College surging back to life as the students return and the hum of learning and activity fills the campus.
I extend a warm welcome to our new families and students who are joining us. We look forward to getting to know you and sharing this next chapter of life with you. We also welcome Pastor Thomas and Mr Prinsloo into our community and pray that God’s richest blessing may be with them as they serve our community.
The Australian Curriculum, Years F-10, has been under a review process since June 2020. With the public consultation period on proposed revisions now finalised, our attention is focused on keeping abreast of the updates leading to the January 2022 release. We are taking this opportunity to review our 7-10 curriculum. In particular, how we are addressing the cross-curricular priorities. I gratefully acknowledge the work being done by our faculty as they continue to proactively create, map and review the curriculum that students are engaging with.
Lastly, I want to wish our teams that are participating in the gruelling 96km Kokoda Challenge all the very best. This year our three teams are being led by Mr Patrick Rudd (Boys Boarding House Parent), Mrs Jana Anderson (SSC Sports Coordinator) and Mrs Karin McKenzie (Head of Mathematics).
I also want to acknowledge and thank Mr Darrin Cox for the work that he has done behind the scenes. To the staff and students tackling this challenge and their support crews, my thoughts are with you. Look after each other and I look forward to catching up with you out on the course, as you work your way through this challenge.

Duke of Edinburgh Award – Gold Level Residential Project
The Duke of Edinburgh Award provides a great opportunity for young people to explore their full potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world. There are three levels to the Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold. To achieve an Award, each young person must learn a skill, improve their physical wellbeing, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure in a new environment. For the Gold level, you must also complete a ‘Residential Project’, something which offers unique experiences outside the usual comfort zone over a minimum of five days.
‘Camp Kanga’ is a great experience for young people, sponsored by Lions Australia. Over the July holidays, I travelled to Proserpine, Queensland and spent a week at the camp along with 26 other teens aged 16-18 from across Queensland and Northern NSW. The camp was a great opportunity for young people to come together and experience a range of activities, work with others, be personally challenged and have fun. My goal was to work as part of a team and support the camp leaders to engage and encourage young people to participate and feel confident in groups and activities outside of their comfort zone.
At the camp everyone gave a presentation about where they were from and some things about themselves. It was really interesting to learn about the others, their towns and families and get an insight into their personalities, passions and interests. I was the only participant from Toowoomba.
We spent the week doing various activities around the camp site and the Whitsundays, including ocean rafting, snorkelling, oval activities and a pretty epic bonfire on the last night. Activities at the camp involved working in assigned groups, encouraging teamwork, cooperation and perseverance, in order to complete multiple challenges. These included sports and obstacle courses requiring everyone to work together and develop their teamwork skills. In our teams we also had to complete indoor activities such as trivia and dancing. Although my team came last out of the four teams, we still had a great deal of fun and worked really well together and were proud of how we helped each other face our own mental and physical challenges.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to engage with and encourage the other teens there to participate and feel confident in the activities. The group included some teens who had not been on camps such as this and some were shy around others. It was interesting to see how the many diverse personalities still found meaningful connections. It was a great feeling to help others step outside of their comfort zone either in the activities or just socialising with everyone, and it didn’t take long before special friendships were formed across the entire group. I consider myself so lucky to have gone on this camp and will cherish it, the people I met, and the friends I made for a very long time.
The camp staff were a fabulous crew of Lions volunteers who were great to work with, and a lovely example of service to others and benefits from being a Lions Clubs Australia member. Their work inspired us to be our best selves, and the District Governor’s talk about ‘footsteps’ and the importance of what we can achieve was inspiration for our future choices.

Boarding
Boarding News
The holidays are over and back to school! We hope that you all enjoyed your time with your children. They have all returned to College very positive and happy. Students arrive in dribs and drabs on the travel day every term and the excitement one hears in their voices when they see their best friend, boarding sisters or brothers arrive, reiterates how our boarders have made Concordia Boarding a home away from home.
Students busy themselves with taking ownership of their personal space by decorating their rooms and packing away their belongings. Chatter and laughter start to fill the dorm, sounds from balls bouncing and excited screams of joy are echoed throughout the dorms.
We are following all COVID-19 requirements relating to dorms and common areas. Nurse Libby keeps us all well informed.
Origin night was huge success for all the Queensland supporters. A great win!
We have a busy term coming up with lots of activities and outings for the students to get involved in. All external sports will recommence in Week 3.
Please enjoy the photos in the gallery below.
I look forward to giving you more updates next week.
