The Week Ahead - End of Term 2
Friday 18 June 2021
From the Head of College
It is with mixed feelings that I put āpen to paperā to address the Ā鶹“«Ć½ community for one last time. The memories from the past three and a half years flood back; reflections on the progress made in many educational areas across the College in these years, the challenges of the 2020 pandemic and, of course, the achievements of the children and young adults who have passed through the doors of their school ā fully prepared to make a difference in the world.
As expressed to parents, staff and students at various functions held throughout the past week, to serve as Head of College at Ā鶹“«Ć½ has been a privilege and rewarding experience. My āthirty plus yearsā in the Lutheran schooling system has meant that I have been blessed to serve as Principal or Head of five schools across two states. What a joy!
My time at Ā鶹“«Ć½ features as the pinnacle of my vocational experiences in many ways. Primarily, I was able to lend my expertise and give back to what is (in my eyes) a ācathedralā school of the Lutheran Church of Australia. I thank God for this opportunity and for the chance to join and contribute to such a superb community. Thank you one and all!
I pray that you enjoy the holiday break, safe travel, and time to rest before Term 3 commences for students on Tuesday 13 July.
As I take my leave, I pray this timeless blessing over all in the Ā鶹“«Ć½ community:
The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you
and give you peace. Amen.
In His Service.

Resident Guru: Kathleen Jennings Author and illustrator
In Term 3, we are very excited to announce we will be hosting author, illustrator and Concordia Old Scholar, Kathleen Jennings, for a week long artist residency. During her stay with us from 26 to 30 July, Kathleen will be running workshops with Year 5 and 6 students and the Years 10 and 11 students.
The students will be experimenting, creating and exploring the mechanical, Australian Gothic birds and narrative construction through illustration and writing. Not only will this be a unique opportunity for our students to work with a celebrated arts professional, it will give them problem solving and creativity skills which will assist them in many aspects of the curriculum, not only English and Visual Art.
We also extend an invitation to our parents and community to join us on Thursday 29 July at Warwick Street Campus for a Wine and Words evening with Kathleen. See below for further information.

From the Directors
New Library Coordinator
We are looking forward to welcoming Mrs Karen Maben to joining the Junior Campuses at the beginning of Term 3. Karen has extensive experience working in school libraries and brings with her a wealth of ideas that will be implemented over time. One of our first initiatives is that we are going to operate the library on a Thursday morning from 7.30am for parents who would like to come and enjoy a time with their child/ren reading or spending time in the library. Grab a coffee and curl up with a book for a little while before the start of the day.
Uniform Guide
Holidays are a great time to assess whether your Concordia Uniforms are complete or are you needing to update. The CLC uniform shop will reopen Monday 12 July during our Pupil Free Day and this could be a great opportunity to get the items that you need. There is also a Concordia Parents, Buy, Sell and Swap School Uniforms Facebook group that you could access to see if they have second-hand items that you may need.
Please note the only non logoed items in our uniform are the
- Shoes (specific requirements are listed in the Uniform Guide about shoes)
- Navy tights (only to be worn with the skirt and are 40/70 denier)
- Gloves (navy)
If the CLC Uniform Shop does not have your required size, please contact your Reception so that we can give you alternatives. We definitely do not want students to get cold so will find alternatives as required.
. If you have any concerns or questions over any piece of the uniform, please contact your Reception on AdminHSC@concordia.qld.edu.au or AdminWSC@concordia.qld.edu.au

From the Director
We are feeling extremely blessed that our 2021 Term 2 was so very different to 2020 Term 2. Extra-curricular activities this term included our Year 4 and 5 camps, Disco, Wine and Cheese night and Under 8s Day - all of which we missed out on in Term 2, 2020.
We are looking forward to Term 3 with the return of our Festival of Learning on Tuesday 7 September. This Festival will showcase some amazing learning from our students and we look forward to sharing this with you.
On behalf of the HSC Team, I would like to thank you for your support throughout Semester 1 and we hope you have a wonderful break. We are already excited about the teaching and learning that will occur in Term 3.
Student Leader in the Spotlight
Jack ā IT Captain
Mrs Priest:
"Jack is a valued member of our Year 6 students. His skills in the area of IT are very well known and recognised by both staff and students. Anything goes wrong … and the call goes out for Jack. āJack, I have to do this webinar but I canāt get the camera to work. Can you help me please?ā Of course he could. Thanks Jack for always being fantastic with IT and for helping us out."
Mr Andrew Tennent:
āWhere do I start? I do not know what I would do without Jack.
Whenever anyone in the room has an issue with technology (including me!), we all turn to Jack. His knowledge of the computer is outstanding.
He has been able to fix small issues with students trying to log in to their device up to larger issues we have had with the network. In this last week when some students could access the network and most couldnāt log on, he has āhot spottedā computer that couldnāt log on to those that could.
He seemed to know everything about the new interactive screen before it came into the room. He had my device connected in no time and was able to even connect it remotely across the room. When visiting teachers come to the room, he is able to set up their device as well.
Jack has always been in charge of setting up student laptops to the interactive screen when doing speaking presentations so that they could show PowerPoint presentations while they spoke. He would then organise the iPad on a tripod to video the student presentations and then posted them onto Seesaw.
Jack has been wonderful in setting up for Chapel/Assembly and I know that I have been able to send him to the Assembly Hall by himself to meet with teachers to set their device up ready for Chapel.
Teachers across the campus have also contacted me during the school day with issues in their own classrooms and Jack has gone to their rooms and has been able to assist in getting students back online.
In the last week of term, Jack āunboxedā one of the new 3D printers and had it set up in no time and then printed a ātestā piece to ensure that it is ready for use for Term 3. We are looking forward to being able to use the 3D printers next term to be showcased at our āFestival of Learningā.
Jackās role this year has enabled him to grow in confidence with communicating both to students and to adults as well.ā
HSC Staffing
We would like you to know about a couple of changes to our staffing for Term 3.
Mrs Stacey Warrener and Mrs Melissa Reimann will be working a 5 day fortnight each in Year 5. This means …
- Week 1 Stacey M,T,W and Melissa Th & F
- Week 2 Stacey T,W and Melissa M,Th,F
As far as the students are concerned, they will notice very little change as they are already familiar with having both of these teachers.
We are welcoming Mrs Christa Connelly back for Term 3 and 4 to work the Thursday in Year 1. Christa is extremely excited to be back working with the Year 1ās.
Thank you Mr Wiles
āDear Juanetta
Thank you so very much for the beautiful chapel service and the lovely sendoff for Mr Wiles. It was so funny and touching at the same time. Loved the references to the number 7, the lists of 7 things, and then the 007. Especially loved the tunnel at the end. Was such a great way to farewell Mr Wiles. Weāve been so blessed and fortunate to have him. Iām sure God has other wonderful plans for him.ā (from a parent)

Throughout the second part of Term 2, there have been multiple inter-house soccer games leading up to the 2021 HSC Teachers vs Students. The 2021 HSC teachers vs Allstars was an explosive match with the teachers proving to be a tough match up but not tough enough.
This match showed an awful lot of talent with the all-stars winning 1-0 due to a roaring goal set up by Quade Howe who lobbed the ball straight to Charlie Lowis for the match-winner. The next part of the match saw the teachers go ever so close to scoring but due to William Shortās excellent goalkeeping, he saved it. The students were pacing down the line and passed straight to Chase Robertson who unfortunately ended up being ruled as offside.
For a short period, it looked like the teachers were going to score through Mr Andrew Tennent. It would have been the equalizer, however, thanks to Wil Sorenson he shanked it. With the clock ticking down, the teachers who were in possession as the siren sounded, took a shot from 3 metres out. Mrs Carolyn Lynch lined up to take the shot which went out and that was the game! All the students were ecstatic that they won!! Congratulations to the All Stars.

From the Director
As I look back at Term 2 when writing to you this week, I realise that the amount of events and learning that has taken place in the last nine weeks is phenomenal. I commend the students on their efforts throughout the term and congratulate the teachers and support staff for all they have done. This week our parents have had the opportunity to share in the successes of the student through our Parent/Teacher Interviews, where they have had the opportunity to see the incredible amount of work that has been produced this term.
Yesterday WSC farewelled our Head of College, Mr Adrian Wiles at our Closing Chapel Service. Our focus for the service was The Parable of the Mustard Seed where we learnt how tiny things can grow into big things. Mr Wiles has not only assisted WSC in its growth over the last few years but the entire College.
So he can remember the students at WSC, we presented him with a framed picture of a tree with the fingerprints of all the students and staff as its leaves. Mr Wiles ā āLittle seeds grow into mighty trees. Thank you, Mr Wiles, for helping us grow.ā
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all families a very relaxing, enjoyable and safe holiday period and I look forward to welcoming our school community on the first day of Term 3. Happy holidays!!
Year 6 vs Staff Beach Volleyball
The staff retained their title of Beach Volleyball champions again this year after a tight match at lunch time on Tuesday. The Year 6 class started out fiercely and had the staff down 6-0 within the first few minutes. Luckily, the staff managed to get into the groove to take out the title with a final score of 21-19. Congratulations to everyone on a great match! Special thanks go to Mr Baker for umpiring the match ā although Iām sure there were a few questionable calls!

Stephen Street Campus
For everything, there is a season.
As students are settling into the first day of their mid-year holidays and as teachers finalise their marking and reporting, there is a strong sense that it is time for a break. To down tools, to recharge, to refocus and to enjoy spending time on pursuits outside the constraints of an assessment task sheet.
Reports will be coming out early next week with our Stephen Street Campus, Parent-Teacher-Student interviews being held Monday 12 July. Details on how to book an interview will also be sent out next week.
Mr Wiles…
As you know, our Mr Wiles is having a second attempt at retiring. Speaking personally, it has been an extraordinary privilege to have been able to work so closely with Adrian for the past 3.5 years.
Whether sharing a devotion at a leadership meeting, teaching a Year 8 Design class or setting up tables and barbecues for a predawn Rite Journey Calling and Departure Ceremony, Adrian was there, leading with good humour, clear vision and in a way that inspired others to do the same. In his words, āYouāre not going to burn the place down… just have a go!ā
It has been this infectious, strategically focussed, ājust have a goā approach to situations, challenges and opportunities that have seen this community grow from strength to strength. Adrian, it is with a deep sense of gratitude and profound respect that we say thanks for everything that you have given to this community and we pray that Godās richest blessings go with you as you embark on the next chapter of life.
Happy holidays everyone. See you next term.
