The Week Ahead - Term 2, Week 7
Monday 1 June to Friday 5 June 2020
From the Head of College
Welcome to another edition of The Week Ahead. This week and next week are times where we catch up with matters that have built up throughout the first five weeks of the term. It seems like no time at all since we started the virtual learning packages, and all the organisation associated with this change in delivery platform. Now we are settling into the normal flow of school activity that fills the end of any school semester e.g. examinations, assignments, reports and the list goes on. We continue to meet challenges in this new education world on a very regular basis and I thank our community for walking with us on this journey.
This week we have been interviewing applicants for 2021 Scholarships. What a delight it has been to speak to so many young people who are engaged with their passions in life, and who have so much to offer our College. A record number of students have applied, and I look forward to completing the process in the coming week and to making offers to those who will be successful in their application.
In the first week of the coming school holidays, enrolment tours will recommence. We will be taking into account the health guidelines that will be in place at the time; however, I would encourage members of our community to let other parents know that bookings will need to be made through the office of our Enrolment Registrar as soon as possible.
Kindest regards and blessings

Queensland's Best Kept Secret
Our Marketing team enlisted to create a promo video for Concordia... then handed over the keys to our students to drive the project. We hope you enjoy this "not so average" school marketing video! Click here for more detail on some of the items mentioned in the video.

What a blessing it has been this week to have all of our students back! Teachers were VERY excited, and students were both excited and a little apprehensive. It has been a little like being back at the start of the year. Walking through and listening to the students as they reconnected shows how valuable our social connections are and how blessed we are to have such an amazing community of people. As the week progressed, apprehensions have disappeared and all are settling back into school mode.
Teachers have loved the āno interruptions of eventsā and being able to spend the majority of their time working on Maths and English. As always after a long break, students have had to remember what life at school is like … āWhat, I canāt just eat whenever I like!!ā Teachers have had some great activities this week to help them resettle back into school. Check out the STEM project by Year 3 and 4 … they are going to be working on LEGO Animations, learning STOP motion cinematography as well as linking it in with their narrative writing.
Unwell Students
Our current health directive from the Qld Chief Health Officer, states that unwell students are not to attend the school site and that students who come to school who are showing any symptoms of sickness (including a cold) must be sent home immediately. Therefore for the health and safety of all staff and students, if your child is showing ANY symptoms of sickness, please keep them at home and consult with a Doctor to see if Covid-19 testing is required.
Staff Meeting Discussions
āThere are a number of letters in English that are not pronounced or pronounced differently in certain words. This pattern of irregularity affects about 25% of English words, but within that 25% are of the most frequently used words.ā No wonder we have trouble spelling English words. Languages such as Spanish, Italian and Korean are very phonetically based so much easier to spell their words.
At our staff meeting this week, we dived into the data of our studentās spelling and have had some very rich conversations about how to improve our results in this area. The MultiLit program is excellent in supporting rich learning of the English sounds, grammar rules and therefore spelling. We are particularly looking at our Year 2-6 students to improve their spelling.
As soon as our meeting was finished, we had teachers in the Resource Centre excitedly pulling out Spelling/Phonics research and resources. We look forward to sharing more with you as we journey into Spelling.
Student Access to Water
Bubblers are off under the advisement of the QLD Health Dept. When they contact Nurse Libby at SSC, this will change. Each room has access to sink/water for refilling student water bottles. Staff and parents are asked to encourage students to ensure that they let the adults know if they need a top up. We will have extra cups or bottles of water for students who have forgotten their water bottle. Parents, can you please assist during this time by checking with your children to ensure that they have their water bottles with them.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Thank you for your patience and support with our new Drop Off and Pick Up procedures. A couple of points to remember:
- Students are to be dropped off in the Drive Through between 8am-8.30am.
- Staff will be on supervision duty from 8am.
- Students are not permitted to get out of their cars until a staff member is on duty.
- If your child is a late arrival or early departure, please contact Reception on 4688 2700 (opt 2), so we can let your child into the Office and taken to class.
Friday PM Sport
As Friday sport is on hold for now, our Year 5/6ās will enter into a Concordia Comp within our own campus. More info about this will be passed on through the students.
Thank you again for your support.

News from the Director of Campus
Why I love my job...
I feel like the Stephen Street Campus has let out a collective sigh this week as we all found our way back into classrooms and have enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with each other. On Wednesday, I convened the inaugural Stephen Street Campus Captainsā Cabinet where I challenged our Leaders to reimagine the way that we continue to create and share opportunities for students to flourish. The new Weekly Madness section on LOVE CLC will be just one way that our Captains will be connecting with our community and I look forward to seeing their other initiatives gain traction. This morning, one of our Year 11 students floated the idea of a CLC Podcast…. I think they might be onto something… watch this space.
Today's arrivals also looked slightly more vibrant than the usual blue and white, with students and staff getting behind our Student Council to raise funds and awareness of the work that is being done by , Toowoomba. Students raised $150 and also donated a huge range of non-perishable food and toiletries. Well done and thank you!

Lastly, a little 3D printed steam train.
In my spare time, I teach two Year 7 classes, Mathematics and Design and Technology. When I set the task for my Design class for this term, I was quite sure that we were biting off more that we could chew. After my first lesson, which turned out to be a Teams contortions exercise, I was even more concerned. Needless to say that we have all been on a steep learning curve and today was an absolute highlight as during our first face to face lesson ever, some of my students had already downloaded the software, completed all the part files, converted them into a file type for 3D printing, submitted them via Student CafƩ and I had printed them ready for assembly! It may only be a little 3D printed steam train but it will sit on my desk for years to come to remind me that we should never underestimate what is possible if you are prepared to take a risk.
