The Week Ahead - Term 1, Week 4
Monday February 17 to Friday 21 February 2020
From the Head of College
The Rite Journey
Welcome to a new edition of The Week Ahead. It was a delight to join our Year 9 students, parents and staff before dawn for the Rite Journey âCallingâ at Picnic Point. As I was immersed in the cooking of the BBQ, I could not help but reflect on the importance of rituals in all our lives. This morning was for our students and parents, the start of a year that processes through a number of activities including the Googa Outdoor Education experience. It culminates with a final Chapel service; however, I really thought about how important it is to extend the Rite Journey concept for the benefit of our young people. It is written into our , and I look forward to an investigation in this area getting underway in the near future.
Old Scholars Association and Alumni
I am pleased to let you know that Mrs Julie Gould has kindly taken on the coordination role to bring together our old scholar and alumni community. We are aware of many past student and staff cohorts gathering together to share stories and often the âgoodâ times, and we are looking forward to being able to facilitate such gatherings for all of our past 70 plus student groups who have moved through Concordia. We will be looking to establish connections with all past students and staff, update our contact database, and work alongside these groups as they celebrate their connections to Concordia.
Julie is known to many, and she has had a very long connection with Concordia. I take this opportunity to thank her for willingly taking on this important role within the Concordia community. Further contact and general details will be released in the coming weeks and I look forward to a growing interest in the College as we head towards our 75th Anniversary in 2021.

Junior College Inter-House Swimming Carnival
Recently, Concordia hosted its annual Junior College Inter-House Swimming Carnival. This was the first major Inter-House sporting event for 2020. What a fantastic day it was for all concerned despite the onset of rain threatening to put a dampener on activities.
From the first House War Cries at 8.30am, the students never stopped, ranging from their individual races, through to the House Spirit encouraging each other, enjoying the great meal deal and interacting with the House Mascots. It was evident the students were having fun and enjoying the mateship that comes with the sporting endeavours at these carnivals.
A big thank you to everyone who assisted in some way. A special mention to the WSC P&F for the meal deal and coffee van (very popular), all staff officials, grounds and admin staff and the parents and SSC students who helped in timekeeping and general duties during the day - a fantastic effort! Finally, thank you to Troy and Jodie Chandler of TJs Swim for their expertise with pool/event set up and recording to ensure our carnival ran as smoothly as it did.
From the results of this carnival, our Âé¶čŽ«Ăœ team members have been selected to compete at the Toowoomba Central Zone Carnival (Years 3-7) at Glennie Aquatics on Wednesday, 19 February 2020. We wish all our swimmers the best on this day in their efforts to be selected for the Central Zone team to compete at the Darling Downs Swimming trials next month in Gatton.

Message from the Director
Please take the time to read the following article:
In a nutshell, it talks about the importance of play in a childâs life and the ramifications in student learning of less play. Opportunities to âplayâ, create neuro pathways that build links between the left and right side of the brain. The stronger the connection of the left and right sides of the brain, the stronger the learning. Play can include activities such as sport, climbing trees, jumping on trampolines, riding bikes, building with lego, building cubbies, or anything where they are using their imagination to create.
We are very fortunate at Concordiaâs Hume Street Campus to have such a large space for students to spread out and play. The wide-open spaces create areas for bike riding and sport. We have beautiful spaces for building and creating cubby houses, shops, or whatever is the go for that time. The students can climb trees (with a height limit) and use the monkey bars.
Our Prep to Year 2 students have embarked on a new program this year called the BUILD program… Building Up Independent Learning Dispositions. Three afternoons each week, they are involved in a Perceptual Motor Program (working on fine motor, gross motor, and cross lateral coordination), Social Emotional Programs such as You Can Do It and Zones of Regulation, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and Nature Play (up in the Forest, when it isnât raining). This program is being implemented to give students the opportunity to gain and strengthen vital skills that will assist their learning in all areas.
If you donât already, consider limiting screen time and getting involved in some of the following:
- Swim in the sea
- Build a sandcastle
- Use chopsticks
- Play charades
- Play board games
- Visit an art gallery
- Skim a stone
- Learn a magic trick
- Build a cubby
- Hunt for bugs
- Dance in the rain
- Have a picnic
- Perform a play
- Climb a tree
- Go camping
- Press flowers
- Watch the sun rise and set
- Roll down a hill
- Create a piece of art out of nature
- Wash a car
- Fly a kite
- Visit a museum
- Plant it, grow it, eat it
- Make mud pies

Drive Through
Just a reminder that our Drive Through area is for pick up and drop off only. This area is NOT FOR PARKING during these times. It is a âKiss and Dropâ and pick up zone only. Parents must not park and leave their car in the Drive Through in the morning as it blocks the driveway for other vehicles and creates parking issues. This must remain a safe area for all of our students to use. We appreciate your assistance with this.
P&F Meeting
The next meeting of the WSC P&F will be held on Monday 17 February 2020 from 2pmâ3pm. Members of our P&F meet regularly to chat about the great things happening in the College and at WSC and to discuss ways in which as a parent body, they can contribute to make it even better. They have a lot of laughs and get to know each other while all working towards a common goal. On Monday we will be finalising the plans for our new playground. I invite you to come along and have a look at our plans and playground design.

Wheely Wednesday
Our newly formed Student Council has lots and lots of great ideas. The first one we would like to trial is âWheely Wednesdayâ. To start this off Year 5 and Year 6 students may bring their bicycles or scooters to school on Wednesday. They will be safely stored in the kitchen at the back of The Shed and used at lunchtime (weather permitting.) Helmets are, of course, compulsory and bikes and scooters must not be shared with other students. Be ready for lots more fun activities.

Warwick Street Kindergarten Weekly Chatter
This month the Kindy children and staff are focusing on the vegetable garden. Theyâll be discussing what vegetables they would like to grow, and what theyâll need to help them grow. Gardening engages all sorts of senses and helps children to develop and recognise them without even realising.
Mrs Thomson is asking children to bring a photo of their family to kindy, either in person or you can email it through to: Chelsea.Thomson@concordia.qld.edu.au
And a reminder for Mrs Gillam's room to please bring a family photo in or email one to Kayla at: Kayla.Gillam@concordia.qld.edu.au

The Magician by Raymond E Feist
Angelaâs Ashes by Frank McCourt
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

SSC P&F News
Welcome to 2020!
Firstly Iâd like to thank everyone who braved the torrential rain on Monday night to attend our first P&F meeting at SSC for 2020. It was great to see familiar faces and welcome some new ones too. Itâs hard to believe that weâre already half way through February and for the SSC P&F this is going to be a whirlwind of a semester with a few events happening in the first half of the year.
Bunnings Sausage Sizzle
On Saturday 7 March, due to a cancellation, we have been very fortunate to secure a spot at Bunnings West to host a Sausage Sizzle. This will be our third barbecue there and to date, these have been a successful fundraising opportunity for the P&F and in return, for the College and student community.
We will be seeking parent and student volunteers to assist (in one hour time slots) on the day with cooking and selling. where you will be able to nominate and secure your preferred times to help out. We will be seeking volunteers at Bunnings from 7am to 4.30pm, and students must be 15 years or older to help on the day. If youâre not in a position to help out on the day, please come on down and buy some sausages (thereâs not much in life that beats a Bunnings snag).
Easter Homestyle Bake Fundraiser
To help you get organised for this festive time over the school holidays why not purchase some goodies from our promotion? Homestyle Bake provide quality meals, snacks, treats that are easy to store, freezable, competitively priced and convenient for all working families. They are made by a 100% family owned Queensland business and packed with nutritious real ingredients from Australian growers. Order forms and menus are now available, so please check with your student to ensure you receive a copy. Open Day BBQ
On Saturday 21 March, the SSC P&F will be busy back at the barbecue as we cook up a storm on Open Day. Again, we will be looking for some volunteers to assist us on the day, with set-up, cooking, serving and break-down. Further information will be available closer to the day.
Faulty Towers â The Dining Experience
![](https://media.digistormhosting.com.au/clc-au-qld-41-website/content/The-Week-Ahead/2020/Term-1/T1-Wk-4/Faulty-Towers.jpg?v=1581634259)
This is our major event for the year and will be held on Friday 22 May.
âWhen the audience become diners in the âFaulty Towersâ restaurant, pretty much anything can happen â because 70% of the show is improvised. The fun starts as guests wait to be seated. It then hurtles along in a two hour tour de force of gags and shambolic service as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a 70s style three course meal together with a good dollop of mayhem. Expect the unexpected!
Internationally acclaimed, the show was born in April 1997 as a loving tribute to the BBCâs much-loved TV series. Over a million people around the world have seen it since. As of 2020, 12 teams of cast working from England and Australia tour around 20 countries a year. The show is also into its ninth year in Londonâs West End, where it holds TripAdvisorâs Certificate of Excellence.â (Interactive Theatre International â UK and Australia).
Early Bird tickets will be on sale next week. You can book a table of up to 10 people or just come along with as a couple. So get your friends together and book early for two hours of non-stop laughter! Your ticket price includes a two hour interactive theatre show (with professional actors) and a three course dinner.
If you have any questions or suggestions for the SSC P&F committee, please email us.
Our next P&F Meeting will be held on Monday 10 March at 6.30pm in the Concordia Function Centre.
Looking forward to seeing you at one of our many events.

Maths Extension Workshop
One of our goals in Mathematics is to not only enrich learning but foster a love for the subject beyond what can be experienced within the time constraints of the classroom. The University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba campus (USQ) provides one of these opportunities. For five weeks starting from Thursday 27 February in the afternoons, USQ will run a Mathematics Enrichment Program available to students in Years 9 and 10.
The program goes for two hours in which students will complete problem-solving activities to help activate their mathematical thinking and also challenge them. Students can register their interest by .

Boarding
Weekly Update
Week 3 is nearly over and our students have all settled into boarding life. Students are full on with their studies, school sport and external sporting commitments.
Our Year 12 students are proudly walking around with their Senior jerseys on!
A big shout out to staff who did a wonderful job with our overseas students when they were in isolation. We are happy to say our boys have settled back into the dorm and at school. One morning in the dorm, I was taken aback as I thought âDoctor Doctor" was in the house but it was Mr Ross doing his rounds!
Our Boarding Captains are exhibiting great leadership in the dining room and in the Boarding House. Well done! Students are enjoying the many different meals in the dining room. Back to Boarding normality.
The installation of new staff, Miss Tosca and Miss Tina, is now completed and both ladies have settled well into their roles.
I am now on the road to recovery following surgery and will be back on deck within a couple of weeks.

Evening Study for Years 7 to 10
In consultation with the Learning Enrichment Coordinator, Mr Darren Pope, we are developing a student driven Learning in Residence study program for the boarders from Years 7 to 10.
So far, the program has been a fantastic step forward, involving the boarding students to have their voices heard in what motivates them to do âhomeworkâ.
One of our new boarders was heard to say happily after a study session, âI got so much work done tonight!"
