Pat Metheny's freshly tanned face breaks into a huge smile when I remind him of a comment he made during a conversation we had two years back.
"My instrument is a device to manifest into sound the thoughts and feelings I have," said the guitar god, who's at Massey Hall Tuesday. "As a musician, I'm constantly looking for new ways to articulate the things I have inside me, but the tool never dictates what I should do."
Metheny's smile and his playful urging to use the lines confirm one of his convictions, which is strengthened every time he enters a studio or concert hall.
For proof, listen to him describing the creative process behind the title composition on his most recent CD, Imaginary Day.
