The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 7
Monday 18 November to Friday 22 November 2019
From the Head of College
We have just spent a very memorable week saying farewell to our Year 12 cohort - the Class of 2019. It was delightful to see these young students finish their schooling at 鶹ý in such fine fashion.
The farewells, final Chapel service, Valedictory Parade and Dinner were meaningful and uplifting affairs – congratulations to our students, parents and staff for all that you have contributed to the Concordia community over many years.
Our prayers and best wishes are with these students as they join together for the Valedictory Service tonight (Friday evening, 15 November) and depart to enjoy a well-earned break prior to the issuing of results in December.
Staffing Update
Members of our community would be aware that staffing changes occur at this time in every school year. As you are aware, in 2020 Pastor Mark Blackwell will move to become Principal at Peace Lutheran School, Gatton. College Council will meet at the end of November to start the ‘call’ process for a new College Pastor through the Lutheran Church of Australia.
Mrs Jana Anderson has been appointed to the role of Sports Coordinator (Stephen Street Campus) – a role that she has been carrying out throughout 2019. We are looking to meet the challenges and aspirations as laid out in the Strategic Plan, and this role is integral to the future of sport across 鶹ý.
Mr Darren Pope will join the Concordia staff next year with a role to coordinate Learning Enrichment at Stephen Street Campus. Mr Pope’s background and experience is extensive, and in recent years, he has had a leading role in this whole area of specialist learning as Education Officer for Lutheran Education Queensland. He has also had a strong history of senior leadership roles in schools across Queensland and we look forward to welcoming him to the College.
Ms Fiona Stone will be leaving us at the end of this year. Fiona has done an amazing job of building an exciting STEM program in the Junior College. She will be sadly missed.
I take this opportunity to wish these staff every blessing as they continue their journey in education in 2020 and beyond.
An Invitation
In the coming week, we will be focusing on completing the year’s work and preparing for events such as the Christmas Carols evening at Hume Street Campus on Sunday 24 November. This is a whole of College event, and all members of our community are welcome to join with us as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Christ Jesus. Further details are available in this publication, and I look forward to being with you on this occasion.
Kindest regards
Mr Adrian Wiles

Student Council - Green Wall Installation
This week we saw another addition to the Student Council quad improvement project with the instalment of the vertical garden ‘green wall’. There are many advantages to having a green wall in a space: the aesthetic appeal inarguably being one of them. After countless hours of work by Grounds Staff Mr Barrie Knott and Mr Chris Medill, that we are most grateful for, together with some assistance from Year 12 students, the green wall sits proudly on the wall of B Block overlooking the quad. A beautiful addition to what is becoming a much-loved area of the College for students to enjoy both in breaks and even migrating during class for some learning outdoors.
Thanks to the students of Stephen Street Campus for your ongoing support of Student Council events and the Student Council executive of 2019 for making these things possible.

Re-live the Magic!
Earlier this week, the moment that all musical students have been waiting finally arrived – the unveiling of the Bugsy Malone photo board! After combing through hundreds and hundreds (and hundreds!) of amazing photos from Bugsy, we finally managed to whittle it down to 46 of the photos we think truly represents what a fantastic production was Bugsy Malone.
We extend an invitation to all staff, parents and CLC students to visit the Arts Foyer in M Block over the next couple of weeks and have a look at the photo board, which now holds pride of place outside the Arts Staffroom. It is such a stunning reminder of how incredible our students are here at 鶹ý. Thank you all once again for all the hard work you put into Bugsy Malone to make it such a great success. Thank you also to Ms Judy Burgis and Mrs Annette Andrews for taking such beautiful photos, making it so hard for us to decide which ones to use!

The Year 9 Rite Journey Coming Home celebration
Over 150 students, parents and staff, attended the Coming Home celebration on Tuesday 5 November at SSC. The purpose of the evening was to mark the conclusion of the Year 9 Rite Journey program and to celebrate the transition of the 36 young people into the Senior College.
The evening began with a community barbecue and then those attending gathered in the Chapel for a time of devotion and reflection on the year. Students were given the opportunity to share their experiences of the year-long program and many were able to articulate what they had learned about themselves and others and how they had grown as individuals. Many of these reflections included insights into the impact of the Googa Outdoor Education Experience from which they had recently returned. The evening was made even more special by the attendance of ten Googa staff.
Both Mrs Karen Rohde and I, as Year 9 Rite Journey teachers, have appreciated the positive manner in which our classes have approached the year and their willingness to embrace the challenges of the program. We are both very proud of them all and wish them the best for the future.
Mr Stephen Miegel
Rite Journey Coordinator
In the Rite Journey and Googa Experience, I learnt many important values that I feel have changed me for the better. These values include authenticity, grace, order, optimism and generosity. They have taught me to never doubt myself and always to believe, but also to enjoy the present as it is and not to worry about the future or hold onto the past. The best things about Googa for me were the high ropes, three-day hike, solo and learning new things about the environment, myself and others. Googa helped me to appreciate the little things in life, such as a flushing toilet and dishwasher but also the bigger things in life, such as my loving and supportive family and my many sport and arts opportunities.
Skye Arnold
This year in Year 9, I wanted to change myself. Thoughout the year I’ve learned not to be scared to raise my hand. Year 7 was my worst year as I never raised my hand then. Throughout the year I knew I could change, so I have. I’ve started to put my hand up a lot. I’ve also asked for help from friends and teachers. I am very thankful that my mum has sent me here to Concordia. When my mum dropped me off at the boarding house, she said to me, “Head down, bum up and work.” I am glad she said that to me because I don’t think I would be here right now.
My Googa experience also helped me a lot. The staff there would tell me to “never give up and keep on going.” That was probably the best thing about Googa. The staff would always cheer you up whenever you are down. What challenged me the most at Googa, was pioneering, because on the very last night while my group was trying to fall asleep all these spiders came out of nowhere! So Skye and me were on guard to keep them away. Finally, the spiders left, and we all fell asleep. When it was morning, I had overcome the challenge of being outdoors without knowing the time and not having a soft bed to sleep in. I was happy with my group and myself for overcoming the challenge. I’ve been challenged a lot throughout the year. I hope Year 10 will be a great year for me and that I will ‘put my head down, bum up and work hard.’
Christine Watson
The Googa experience was an incredible experience. I learnt a lot about myself through the Googa experience. The various activities that we completed were often intense and fun. The staff there were very nice and very attentive to your needs. This experience allowed me to grow in maturity, learn a lot about myself and who I should strive to be.
Sebastian Eastman
As part of The Rite Journey experience this year, the Year 9 cohort embarked on a month-long camp. This was called Googa. Googa was the main part of The Rite journey and was a turning point for a lot of people. Googa will mature you emotionally and will set you up with skills for the rest of your life.
Jack Foran
The Googa Experience was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed my time there. I learnt a lot about myself and learnt a lot about other people as well. The staff there were all really kind and all the activities were interesting and very fun. Overall, my Googa experience was the best experience I’ve ever had.
Isaac Peake
This year, Year 9 has participated in The Rite Journey, a program that challenges our comfort zones, perception of the world, and relationships. The biggest part of this would have to be Googa. This amazing camp has taught me so many things but most importantly, how valuable attitude is. Worrying and stressing gets you nowhere but a positive and open mindset can get you through almost anything. Thanks to Googa and The Rite Journey, I’m now so thankful for my family, friends, support, dishwashers and nature, I don’t know what I’d do without them. This challenging experience has helped me grow and change and build who I am as a person.
Melissa Gillbard
Googa forced us as a cohort to learn to deal with challenges and resolving conflicts. It was also a fun time for all where we engaged in various entertaining and difficult activities such as hikes and pioneering. Over the month we formed a real group bond and strengthened our friendships and relationships.

Volleyball
On Tuesday 5 November, the Girls Volleyball Team competed in the grand final playing for the gold medal! From winning gold last season and being moved up a division, the girls have achieved so much to have made it to this season’s final. This season was particularly hard for the girls as they haven’t had a full side all season with boarders away, state championships and Googa affecting the students' attendance.
The girls had to play Harristown SHS in the finals. Our girls played a strong game but unfortunately came out second best. The girls fought hard, losing the first set but winning the second taking it to a three-set decider, and while close, they did not grasp the gold.
The girls should be extremely proud of their efforts, they have overcome a lot of challenges to get there as well as developed many new skills and perfecting the fundamentals.

Campdrafting
Last weekend, three 鶹ý students competed in the Percentile Cup Inter-School Campdraft in Pittsworth. Kiara Anderson, Darcy Minnikin and Emma Lawson competed in the three-day event along with 260 other students from 31 schools, covering an area from Rockhampton to St George to Armidale (some students were from cattle properties from Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory!)
Competition was fierce once again. The skill development and improvement in confidence of all our riders was great to see. Congratulations to Rockhampton Grammar School for their back-to-back win. Thanks to the parents and supporters who contributed to allow these students this fantastic opportunity.
Physie Seniors Nationals
Congratulations to Ella Stangherlin who made the national semi-final (top 60 in Australia) out of 172 competitors at the recent Physie Seniors Nationals. Eleven heats of 15 year olds competed, with the judges picking the top four heats worth of girls who then competed again in the semi-final.
Physie is a combination of dancing, aerobics, gymnastics and ballet.
