The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 2
Monday 11 October to Friday 15 October 2021
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Itās my pleasure to welcome back every family to Term 4. I trust that you have had a relaxing and safe term break as a family. The student body needs to be commended on how quickly they have settled back into school routines again. Thank you for your support in ensuring that your student(s) presents well in their Day/Formal Uniform both at and away from school as per the full uniform requirements. We have emphasised the need for them to be great ambassadors for Concordia and their family when they are out and about.
The next seven weeks will no doubt keep us busy as we look at finishing up well by graduating our Years 6 and 12 students respectively, support our Years 5 and 11 students as they step up as our new senior cohorts and leaders for 2022 and hear about our Year 9 students thriving and growing at Googa over the next four weeks. At the same time, our Prep and Year 7 students are almost done with their first year at primary and high school, respectively. Everyone is invited to be part of and hang on for this exhilarating finish to the school year at Concordia.
Congratulations to all our Year 12 students as they wrap up their time at Concordia next week with their Recognition and Valedictory Evening on Monday and a closing Chapel on Friday. I hope to see many of you at the various events planned for your students. These events and rites of passage will become life-long memories as we graduate these students into the adult world.
Our Junior College has also begun their Christmas for the Bush Service Learning project for Term 4. This wonderful project is being run in conjunction with Care Outreach Australia. The various items collected will, over the coming weeks, be distributed amongst 2000 families in regional Queensland just in time for Christmas. Thank you for your wonderful support of this project. The more I read about the latest research on gratitude and service learning, the more obvious it has become that reaching out to others on a regular basis, as well as being appreciative and thankful for our daily comforts are critical for good mental wellness.
Over the term break I received a letter from a local principal whose school did the Table Top walk/climb on the same day that our Year 9 students participated in this activity as part of their Rite Journey experience. The reason for the principal contacting me was to affirm the āfriendliness, respectfulness and all-round compassionā which our students displayed towards these peers from another college. The principal went on to mention āthe words of compassion and encouragement from every one of your students and staff members were so worthy of note that I am moved to email you.ā How affirming is this for us as a College and for you as parents, as together, we keep adding to the foundations and layers of living which will stand these youngsters in good stead in the coming years. I will endeavour to share this further with our Year 9 students on their return from Googa in Week 5.
Staffing update ā I would like to use this opportunity to welcome to our Junior College Mrs Suzette Vermeulen who is working in Year 4 at Warwick Street Campus while Mrs Barbara Riehl is on long service leave for the term.
Please remember that I propagate a strong open-door policy as I work for and with you at Concordia. Stay safe and healthy and every blessing for a great Term 4.
Yours in Christ

Quote of the Week: ā Speak to your children as if they are the wisest, kindest, most beautiful and magical human beings on the Earth, for what they believe is what they will become!" [B. Hampton]
From the College Pastor
Welcome to Term 4!
Term 4 started with a buzz on Tuesday morning as the Year 9 students and an assortment of parents, carers, siblings and friends gathered to farewell the Year 9 students on their four week Googa experience. This is a significant element of the studentsā Concordia journey and an important part of our Term 4 events. Of course, Term 4 also includes various end of year celebrations and awards, Year 12 final exams and farewell, preparation for transition to high school for Year 6 students, Christmas services and so much more.
The Year 9 students were encouraged to look to the example of the disciples, who heard Jesusā call: Follow me (Matt 4:18-22) and stepped out in faith. The students are likewise challenged to step out of their comfort zone into something new and to be open to grow as people through the challenge and learn new things about themselves, each other, and perhaps also God.
In a way, the Year 12 students are standing at a similar threshold, finishing their formal schooling and stepping out into the wider world.
I suspect most of us have faced and will face such situations from time to time. Where we are called to move from one thing to another, to leave that which we know and are (mostly) comfortable with and step into something new and perhaps unknown.
We are able to do this courageously and in hope, because we have a God who promises to be with us on our journeys, to guide us along the way and to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
As the disciples stepped out from their settled lives and followed Jesus, they discovered new things about themselves, and about God, and they eventually grew into messengers, who shared what they had learned and seen and who inspired many to follow Jesus and find life and hope there. I suppose you can draw a line to the existence of Ā鶹“«Ć½ today from their lives and message.
I pray that as you face various challenges in your lives, you may be able to face them in the trust that you are never alone, and in the hope that with God on your side, you will overcome and grow through them.
Have a blessed Term 4!

Community News
Walk My Way (Term 4)!
Did you know that for just $26 a child in a refugee camp like Kakuma, Kenia, can go to school for a whole year? Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) has been providing support for children like this for many years, and many Lutheran school across Australia have been inspired by this initiative.
So, early Term 4 Ā鶹“«Ć½ is challenged to Walk my Way, and help send some more children to school and so gain a better future.
The challenge is to walk 26km ā and we are doing this as a community: Each Home Class is challenged to walk 2km over the first three weeks of Term 4 (13 Home Classes x 2 = 26km). The Year 9s will do something at camp and the two Junior College campuses are also joining in.
The walk is partly to remember that many of these children have walked long ways to reach the relative safety of a camp and it draws attention to the opportunity we have to help. Students are encouraged to ask their families to sponsor them by donating directly to the website ALWS has established for us (by house).
There will be a House competition to see how many children each House can send to school.
Make sure you direct your donation to the house you want to support:
Since Martin Luther and his fellow reformers promoted and reformed education, and we are an educational institution, we believe it is a very appropriate initiative to support. At our reformation services in Week 4, we will unpack this further and reveal the winning house.

Stephen Street Campus
From the Director of Campus
Welcome to Term 4!
Over the September break, I took a moment to read centenarian Eddie Jakuās memoir, The Happiest Man on Earth. As a survivor of the holocaust, Eddie now shares his perspectives on life that have allowed him to move forward in life and to live it in a way that allowed him to find happiness again.
āHere is what I learned. Happiness does not fall from the sky; it is in your hands. Happiness comes from inside yourself and from the people you love. And if you are healthy and happy, you are a millionaire. And happiness is the only thing in the world that doubles each time you share it.ā Eddie Jaku
For those who aren't pressed for time, here is a video of Eddieās 2019 TedxSydney talk.
In these slightly strange times that we are living in, where we can be feeling a little constrained and uncertain as we navigate the path back to the freedoms we so readily took for granted, the wisdom Eddie shares may be timely.
Life on Stephen Street Campus is already back in full swing. Our Year 9 students headed off to Googa bright and early on Tuesday morning where, for the next four weeks they will experience life at a different pace. A timely opportunity for a technology detox and the chance to explore their abilities as they work through the challenges and activities of the program. The value of this unique program, while very familiar to us, is always profoundly significant in the lives of our students. When listening to studentsā reflections on family day at Googa and at the Coming Home Ceremony for the Rite Journey, I am always left feeling inspired and full of confidence that our future is in safe hands with these young people.
Our Years 11 and 12 students have had the opportunity to sit in two sessions run by Elevate Education. These sessions continue to deliver simple and effective strategies for students to use in order to be more effective in how they learn.
Next week is our Year 12 students' last week of ānormalā classes before heading into SWATVAC and then onto their External Exams. We look forward to celebrating with them at their Recognition and Valedictory Evening on Monday and to the words of wisdom that they share with us during their final Devotion and Assembly.
As I noted before the break, our amazing teachers of Year 12 ran tutorial sessions over the two weeks of the holidays. These sessions were well attended and have been instrumental in assisting our students in their preparations for their final exams. To the teachers, and Ms Wendy Bowen, we simply say thank you for this extraordinary display of commitment to our students.
Have a great weekend.

Farewell from P&F/Parent Connect Chair
When my eldest commenced at Concordia back in January 2014, I thought eight years to November 2021 was an eternity away for my youngest to graduate. Yet here we are and at the end of last term on 16 September, I had the privilege to respond to the Parent/Caregiver toast at the Year 12 Formal, which was fitting as it was my last official event as Chair of the SSC Parent Connect.
When I was first asked to do the speech, I thought, what could I say? Where do I possibly start? Where has that time gone? It has gone in āthe blink of an eyeā.
So I reflected on the moments we as parents have witnessed, specifically from the first day of Year 7 through to now. Over the years, watching our children embrace the school environment, trying new things - Debating, Drama, Art, Music, Sport, Languages, Tech, Food Science, Business, Dance, PE - and discovering what they liked, what they didnāt like.
We observed and supported them undertaking the Rite Journey. We watched as they left on their four week camp to Googa, allaying their concerns about how on earth they could possibly survive for so long without technology, mobile phones, hair dryers and hair straighteners.
We watched how they managed the transition from in-classroom learning to the trying time of online learning ā reinventing the new style classroom environment during the COVID-19 lockdown.
We have watched friendships form, friendships falling apart, friendships reconnecting. We have watched them embrace team and school spirit at various sporting activities, concerts, free dress days, performing arts. With the support of their parents, guardians, loved-ones on the side-lines playing chauffeur taking them to and from training, rehearsals, practices, events.
Over these years we have watched them grow at Concordia.
I commented that I remembered clearly their first day in Year 7 - a sea of faces of children. But on looking around the room that night of their formal, and looking at my daughter, her friends and her peers, I no longer saw those children but instead saw an array of beautiful, handsome, stunning, intelligent, incredible and confident young adults.
It has been an amazing journey. I have watched my son and his friends, and now my daughter and her friends and peers, graduate from this wonderful College, a school my husband and I are glad we chose. A school where I also have created some fabulous memories and made some wonderful friends. A school where I have spent six years as a member of the P&F / Parent Connect where I have had fun times at Welcome Events, Bunnings BBQs, sporting events, Faulty Towers the Dining Experience and Open Days, but along with my daughter, my time has come to say farewell.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at Concordia who have supported us, Karen Watson, Sonya Herndon, the Marketing and Business departments and, of course, Tyrone and his amazing team. To everyone who has come along to our meetings and all parents and family members who have given up their time over this period to help out in various forms at our events, thank you.
I especially want to thank the following committee members who I have had the honour of working with over these years, it has been an absolute pleasure ā Kym, Yvonne, Gavin, Helen and the amazing Lisa who has been an absolute stalwart, and without her continued support I could not have achieved half of it all. Lastly, but by no means least, Mr Jason Smith, thank you cannot begin to express how much your support over the years has meant to me and I wish you every success in your future endeavours.
So as I hand over the reigns to the next generation of parents at the P&F Connect and bid you farewell, adieu, auf wiedersehen and God bless. Donāt forget to treasure the moments and enjoy the ride because it all goes by too quickly... all in the blink of an eye.

Boarding News
We welcomed all our boarders back this week - thank you for returning them all to us. There was lots joy and laughter in the Boarding Houses which endorses that they were all happy to be here. We welcomed a new student, Louisa, to Giabal House. Lou has settled in really well. We hope she enjoys her stay with us.
We have a full activity program which Mr Rudd will be emailing out to all families within the next few days for Term 4. Starting with our trip to Brisbane, āMovie Worldā on 16 October. Weekly boarders are welcome to come at a cost of $50. We encourage all students to participate in this activities.
Sport has quietened down for many, however, the upcoming exams will use up a lot of that time with extra study.
The weather is starting to heat up now and we ask that you encourage your child/children to drink plenty of water and use sunscreen which is available for all boarders at the desk in the Dorm offices.
We are all looking forward to a great term!
