The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 9
Monday September 4 - Friday September 8
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Last week I attended a 2-day Principals’ Retreat hosted by Lutheran Education Queensland. These gatherings afford us, as Principals, the opportunity to slow down, share, listen deeply and reflect on how the journey at our respective schools is unfolding. It affirmed to me that even though we don’t get it right at Concordia every day, we are on a very healthy trajectory as a learning community. This is all possible due to the incredible calibre of student, staff and parent community which make up our College. Thank you for your ongoing loyalty and support of the College.
I had the privilege on Monday evening, along with a packed audience of parents, caregivers, family members, friends, and staff, to hear our College choirs sing at the Year 3 – 12 Choral Showcase. It was amazing to see what our College choirs have achieved this year under the guidance of our conductors and accompanists. Watching around 150 of our leading voices come together for a closing mass choir song, which was rehearsed under tight time constraints, confirmed that coming together as a College in one location in 2025 is going to provide us with so many more opportunities to build on the programs already in place as well creating so many new opportunities. Thank you to Mrs. Hayley Sugars, Mr. Neil Roche-Kelly as our conductors as well as Mrs. Troy and Mrs. Gordon as our accompanists for the difference which you have made in these young people’s lives. Thank you to Ms. Christina Marangelli for the work and support which you have brought to this area of the Arts Program.
As our children are exposed to many opportunities, activities, competitions and challenges, which all come with their highs and lows, I would like to share with you this week tips to build Emotional Resilience in our children.
- Spend quality time with your children. When they feel loved and supported, children develop emotional strength and intelligence.
- Talk about feelings so your child learns to share their worries, fears, triumphs and disappointments with the people they trust most.
- Instead of rushing to solve problems, give children time to work things out themselves.
- When children experience failure or disappointment, it is important to praise their effort and encourage them to go back and try again.
- Acknowledge your own mistakes to teach children that mistakes are essential for learning and growth.
- If your child can’t find a solution to a problem, use gentle questioning to guide them towards it.
- Ensure that your children are getting enough sleep and exercise. [ Acknowledgement: tutor doctor]
Do you know that the College has two tennis courts at the Senior College, across the road on South Street, which can be used free of charge during the school week? So why not, as the weather begins to warm up, pack a picnic morning tea or lunch and enjoy the use of this facility. Please contact Reception at the Stephen Street Campus to collect the key for this facility.
I have had the opportunity to drop into the Tuesday evening Senior College Volleyball Competition and have been impressed by the standard of play, encouragement of one another and great sportsmanship displayed by these students. Good luck to those teams who will be involved in various finals next week. Good luck to our Junior College Chess Team as they trial for the State Championships this weekend. Safe travels to our Year 6 students, staff and parent helpers as they head off to Cairns next week for their Year 6 trip. We look forward to hearing and seeing your news throughout the week.
Yesterday morning I had the privilege of welcoming over 110 grandparents to our Grandparents' Day at the Senior College. We now look forward, over the coming weeks, to hosting our Junior College grandparents. We also hosted a Father’s Day breakfast on our Junior College campuses yesterday morning to kick off the upcoming Father’s Day weekend. These events have again reminded of how much easier it will be in the future to hold and honour these and other events at the same time across a single college campus. Thank you to all the staff who have worked hard behind the scenes to make yesterday’s events so successful.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Concordia Dads and Grandads a very Happy Father’s Day for Sunday.
Have a great weekend.
Yours in Christ.
Mr Anton Prinsloo

This year’s festival brought together choral groups from many of Toowoomba’s secondary schools for a night of singing and entertainment and ended with a combined massed choir finale featuring approximately 300 students. The community spirit and encouraging atmosphere along with the College’s terrific feedback from the guest adjudicator, other conductors and students in other choirs makes this one of the highlight Choral events of the year. CLC Choral Showcase

Being in a choir not only improves and fosters teamwork, it enhances musicality, boosts confidence and provides a sense of community. It offers opportunities for personal growth and can be a source of stress relief and enjoyment.
Thank you to our conductors and accompanist; Hayley Sugars, Neil Roche-Kelly, Kym Troy and Elizabeth Gordon, who work with our students weekly and provide a working team where success in enabled.

Year 11 students are halfway through their exams and Year 12 students are eagerly looking forward to the Boarder Recognition Dinner and the Year 12 Formal which will be the highlight of the term.
We all are looking forward to watching the young ladies and young men walking the red carpet dressed in their formal attire excited that this day has finally come. Our younger boarders love to watch everyone arrive in the flash cars. Oscars at Concordia.
If you are a parent of one of the Year 12 students, I know how you are feeling. Mixed emotions, happiness for your child, overwhelmed with pride and joy, sadness for yourselves as we realise, they are no longer children they are all adults and ready to embrace their newfound freedom and to follow their dreams. Andrew and I wish you a very happy and memorable evening.
Our boarders enjoyed the NRL trip last week with the girls getting some good pics. Everyone had a great night. Thanks again to our driver Andrew and to all the Staff who gave their time freely to support our students.
