The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 4
Monday 2 August to Friday 6 August 2021
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
It is very affirming to see so many families in attendance at various College events and information sessions. Some of these events have included Parent Connect Meetings, the Year 8 into Year 9 Information Evening, the 2021 Futures Expo and supporting the “Words and Wine” artist in residence function. Please don’t hesitate to contact the College if you require further information or support in either the subject selection or careers expo events hosted in Week 3.
Week 4 will see our Warwick and Hume Street campuses welcome our 2022 Prep students and their families to our Prepping for Prep transition program. Transition visits for our 2022 Year 7 students and their families have also begun as we begin to scaffold a smooth transition to high school for these students. These transition visits also allow us to get to know each new learner a little better as well as planning for any differentiation to welcome and set up each learner for future and ongoing success. Please join me in welcoming these students and their families to our wonderful College.
An important part to my leadership style is to “Manage By Walking Around” and as I walk the campuses and classrooms of our College, I am inspired by the high levels of engagement, confidence and ease with which the students are able to explain to me what their learning is about. This is a clear indication that a strong learning philosophy of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria underpin and support our learning environments. Thank you to our teachers and the support staff working with them, for your dedication and absolute professionalism to the learning programs every day.
It’s with mixed emotions that we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Natalie Houston, our Year 11 and 12 Pastoral Care Coordinator, as she begins to prepare for her appointment as the new Principal at St Peter’s Lutheran College, Springfield. Mrs Houston will be a wonderful blessing and inspirational leader to the St Peter’s community. Please keep Mrs Houston and her family in your prayers as she continues her journey at Concordia, but begins to plan for this exciting next season in her career in 2022.
We are also very excited to announce that Mrs Lynda Redinger will be joining the Concordia Community as our new HR Coordinator towards the end of August. Lynda grew up in Toowoomba and has spent most of her life in the area. Lynda and her husband David, who is a local primary school teacher, have two young children, Hannah and Luke. Lynda has over a decade of human resources experience across all areas of HR, most recently as a Senior HR Business Partner in Learning and Organisational Development at Toowoomba Regional Council. Lynda is very much looking forward to being part of the College community and working together to provide best practice HR services and develop exciting new initiatives.
Thank you again for the ongoing warm smiles, friendly greetings and checking in to see how I am settling in as together we continue to forge and reinforce the expectations, routines and learning outcomes for Semester 2.
Stay safe and healthy, and see you back in Week 4.
Yours in Christ
Mr Anton Prinsloo
Head of College
Quote of the Week: A smart person knows what to say. A wise person knows whether or not to say it.
From the College Pastor
The truth shall set you free!
There are a number of different concepts of truth out there - there is scientific truth, there are philosophical concepts of truth, including the post-modern concept of all truth being subjective, and so on. For Christians truth is, in fact, a person: Jesus says of himself I am the truth… (John 14:6).
He invites us to build our lives on him, on his love and his promise to be there for us always, through the joys and sorrows of this life and beyond.
Jesus also said that the truth shall set you free (John 8:32). Indeed, Jesus lived his life, gave his life, and was raised to life, so that we, humans, might be set free from fear and from all forces that seek to oppress and control us.
If you have ever told a lie, you will know that once you start on that way it only becomes worse and you soon find yourself entangled in a whole web of lies. And you better have a very good memory to remember what lies you told to which person. Ultimately this is destructive.
Jesus invites us to tell the truth - even if it is uncomfortable or shows up some wrong we may have done – so that we might be set free, free from the tangle of lies, free from the destruction this usually leads to. I think that when St Paul talks about putting on the “belt of truth” (Eph 6:14) he is on a similar wavelength – truth ultimately protects us where we are most vulnerable.
Telling the truth is often not the easy way, as it may include owning up to a wrong we did and facing the consequences of our action or mistake. But we can do this because we know that in Christ there is forgiveness, there are new beginnings, there is hope, there is life.
At Concordia we seek to live this out through a restorative practices approach, which takes seriously the wrong but helps all affected to learn from it and grow in their relationship with one another. We seek to teach our students the importance to take responsibility, to work through mistakes and wrongs and learn from them, to see how the truth will set us free indeed. This fosters the continued development of a strong and caring community - and certainly what I have experienced of Concordia so far leads me to believe that we have such a community here.
May we all continue to grow in living in the freedom of Christ.
Have a blessed week.

Prep 2022

Anyone who is interested in securing a spot for their child should contact Mrs Bianca Coleborn, our Director of Marketing and Enrolments, to start the process.
Changes to Thursday Morning Drop Off
HSC has always had a strong sense of community. During 2020, the COVID-19 restrictions changed the way we were able to interact but we are very blessed in Toowoomba, that for all intents purposes at this point, we are able to operate as normal. Thursday mornings at HSC are a celebration of our community and being able to be together.
If you have time, come and join us on the Hume Street Oval for a play, a coffee/hot chocolate (our Encouraging Cup Coffee Van) or curl up and read a story with your child. Students can bring their bags with them and come straight down to the Oval for a play.
HSC Student Council News
Our Student Council (SC) have met and will work on three main projects this term:
- Hosting a fun celebration day of the Olympics. They would like to invite all students to come dressed as your favourite Olympian (or sport) Thursday 5 August. This is not a fundraiser, just a fun dress up day.
- Gluten Free Donut and Hot Chocolate Day – date to be confirmed
- Charity support for Term 3 will be Rio’s Legacy – date and more information coming soon.
Come Dressed as your Favourite Olympian - Thursday 5 August
HSC Chapel and Assembly
We have trialled joining these two meeting times and in Term 2 we seemed to get it to work but this term we are consistently running overtime. So we have decided we are going to back to two separate events.
- Wednesday 8.30am needs to remain our Chapel time as it is the time that Pastor Thomas is available.
- Friday 8.30am will now be our Assembly.
Sometimes it is good to try new things but it is always best to recognise when things are not working and need to be readjusted. Thank you for your patience and support while we have trialled this one.
Warwick Street Campus
From the Director
A question that a child will inevitably be asked at some stage in their life will be, “What are you going to do when you grow up?”. The responses always range from a princess right through to a neurosurgeon, with many variations in between.
This week we’ve had the pleasure of former student, now author and illustrator, Kathleen Jennings visit us at Concordia. Not only did Kathleen present workshops to our students, she also entertained us at a community event at WSC last night. Kathleen spoke about her career which began as a lawyer and has now evolved into a prize winning author with her book Fly Away. Kathleen is the perfect example of what someone can do if they are motivated, persistent and resilient. All the traits that we instill in our Concordia students.
Each Monday we have Assembly at WSC where we announce events for our week ahead as well as discussing important things to remember for our school day. For the next few weeks, Mrs Smith will be talking about how we would like our WSC students to show respect to others. Her focus this week was manners and how to greet someone respectfully. Parents are most welcome to join our Assembly whenever they are available. It is held at 1.30pm each Monday in The Shed.

Blessings for the week ahead.

Stephen Street Campus
For every season there is a time…
As you have no doubt read or heard, I am moving on from Concordia at the end of the year. Not an easy decision but the right one for myself and my family. It has been a tough but lovely week as the news was shared with the community and the messages of gracious understanding, thanks and best wishes flowed in. As I shared with the Stephen Street Campus teaching faculty on Tuesday, I leave knowing that the College is in incredibly safe hands. The work that is being done by our staff is extraordinary and I will enjoy watching the College continue to take on the challenge of delivering innovative, engaging future-focused education.
This week, we have thoroughly enjoyed having Kathleen Jennings, author and artist in residence, working with various groups of our students over this week. As I watched Kathleen weave her magic with our Year 11 Visual Art students, I was aware of the extraordinary journey that Kathleen has been on in the years since her time as a student here. We are so grateful to Kathleen for making herself available to invest her time and experience into our students. It has been been an incredible week. Many thanks, Kathleen!
Finally, to all the students who are involved in the Toowoomba Eisteddfod, all the best. Enjoy the opportunity to bring all of your practice onto the stage.

With the colder weather, the students have been fairly house bound. TV viewing has increased. Giabal students are enjoying watching the Olympics. They have been a great indoor entertainer.
