The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 4
Monday 31 July 2023 to Friday 4 August 2023
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Thank you to those parents who have taken up the opportunity this week to attend the Master Planning Parent Information Sessions. It has been very affirming to engage in overwhelmingly positive conversations about the many benefits which are awaiting us as we plan to come together as a College in 2025. A clear and consistent message has been that the essence of Concordia is the people, and not buildings or green spaces, that define who we are as a learning and living community. Itās vitally important to the College that transparency and accuracy of information are at the forefront of this feedback timeline from all stakeholders. Please remember to contact the College if you have been unable to attend one of these sessions but would like to have a conversation with a member of the Leadership Team about the content of the Master Plan.
This coming weekend will see several Concordia students competing in the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. Thank you to those staff members who will be supporting the students in these events. Both the Hume and Warwick Street campuses will be hosting a Prepping for Prep event next week as we begin to transition these young learners into our community for 2024.
With many students currently absent from school with the flu, I thought it fitting to share with you an article about dealing with the flu!
Over the past two years, hardly anyone was exposed to flu due to COVID-19 restrictions, including the shutting of our international border, and so we didnāt develop any natural immunity.
Now that we are back travelling, socialising, and doing the things that we love, more people of all ages are at risk of getting respiratory illnesses, particularly kids aged under 5.
Flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness and is more serious than a common cold. The flu can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis, which often require hospitalisation in the most vulnerable people, including young children and older people. Flu can be more serious for young children than COVID-19.
Queensland Health advises that flu is circulating widely for the first time in two years, coinciding with continuing high numbers of COVID-19 cases. Flu and COVID-19 are both serious illnesses, but flu generally affects young children more than COVID-19.
Flu is easily spread and potentially deadly. We are seeing an increase in hospitalisations of young children and sadly some are very unwell. The flu vaccine is one option to help to protect children from serious illness due to flu and offers plenty of protection in the remaining winter weeks. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following preventative practices:
- Avoid close contact.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose.
- Clean your hands.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Good luck to our Track and Field Team as they prepare for the QCIS Inter-schools' competition on Monday.
Have a great weekend and stay healthy.
Yours in Christ.

See you in September
Ā鶹“«Ć½ has made a change to the dates of the Open Morning. It was scheduled for the morning of August 8, but will now be a week of āSee you in Septemberā.
This new event will take place for a week from September 11th and will offer opportunity to view the college and its facilities, as well as meet teachers and members of the staff. It will help families see the authentic college environment and ask questions of both staff and students.
As always, parents and carers are welcome to come and inspect any of our Concordia campuses on any school day of the week.
We look forward to seeing you in September! If you would like to register your interest to visit one of the mornings of this week, please send an email to Enrolments@concordia.qld.edu.au and be on the lookout for more information. Write the new dates in your calendar.
Youth Leaders Program
The Youth Leaders Program is a volunteer platform for young people aged 14 to 24 to become involved with Toowoomba Regional Council. The program allows young people from across our Region to learn about their local communities' groups, events, activities and youth services.
We currently service a regional population of 173,000 people (ABS, 2021), with approximately 32,000 of these residents being young people.
The Regional Youth Leaders play an important role in ensuring our programs are relevant, meet the needs of local young people and have the greatest reach possible.
The Youth Leaders also get the opportunity to learn about our processes and the role of local governments. We encourage them to have a say and develop grassroots projects to create positive change ā not only for our Region's young people but the wider community.
As part of their role, the Youth Leaders provide a voice for other young people, identify community issues and share information on opportunities for young people to connect to events, programs and service providers.
The Youth Leaders represent areas from across the entire Toowoomba Region.
Please contact Ms Belinda Sanders via email: Belinda.Sanders@concordia.qld.edu.au if you are interested.

Boarding News
Hello to all our families.
Welcome again to our weekly update of Boarding news. Our students have kept busy this week with their various sports and interests.
Several students expressed interest in helping with the Warrick Street campus fundraiser on Saturday evening and went along to all look after some little children. They all enjoyed themselves.
Study has been productive for some and not so for others. This term can be a real struggle for some to remain focused and on par with assessments and assignments. We encourage all our students to make good use of their time management skills and keep up to date with homework. At times sporting events can and do hinder this however with the highly qualified Tutors on shift Monday to Thursday all students are expected to attend afternoon and /or night study sessions. Andrew and I work closely with teachers to best support our studentās needs.
Activities this week will be āBarbie movie āand A āCountry and Western ātheme dinner on Sunday night. Looking forward to sharing some great pics next week with you all.
Please remember if you have any queries or questions feel free to contact Andrew and myself.
Well, thatās all from us this week hope you enjoy our pics.
Take care and look after each other.
