The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 10
Monday 13 September to Friday 17 September 2021
From the Head of College
Dear Parents and Caregivers
I hope that you enjoyed the 75th Anniversary Celebrations which were held last week on Saturday. It was wonderful for our College to host over 1,000 guests on what was a beautiful Spring day.
Some highlights for me included the outstanding variety of performances by our students as well as the gathering of past students from 1946 to 2020. It was our pleasure, as the “Community of 2021”, to host so many of you either as past students and/or current parents on the day.
Our goal, moving forward, is to ensure that the connections which have been established from this event continue to grow in the future. Thank you and congratulations to the current students on being outstanding ambassadors for Concordia on the day.
Your feedback, via email to the College, on how the event went for you as well as suggestions and feedback on what can be considered for future will be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the staff, led by Mrs Bianca Coleborn, for the work done in making this event possible and such a huge success.
Senior Assessment & Celebrations
The Year 11 students have settled-in well to their exam block and from all accounts this is running smoothly for these students and the staff overseeing this process. It is also great to have our Year 12 students back at school again as they consider and fine-tune their preparations for the external assessments happening in early Term 4. I have also this week begun to have Morning Tea with groups of our Year 12 students as part of wrapping up their journey at Concordia, getting feedback on their time here, ideas for the future as well as hearing about their respective journeys and plans for 2022. We are also excitedly looking forward to both the Year 12 Boarder Recognition Dinner and Year 12 Valedictory Dinner next week Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
HSC Festival of Learning
Congratulations to the Hume Street Campus students and staff on hosting a fabulous Festival of Learning on Tuesday evening and following this up with a Grandparents Day on Wednesday. It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance supporting and acknowledging the students on their learning journeys. What struck me most was that every student I spoke to could tell me about the learning journey which they had been on, over the past term, to get to the end “product” – a wonderful showcasing of our philosophy of, “learning to learn.”
Year 6 Cairns Trip
Good luck and bon voyage to the Year 6 students from our Junior College as they prepare to fly off to Cairns on Monday for their school trip. Thank you to Mr Andrew Tennent, Mr Paul Baker and those staff who have worked behind the scenes to make this wonderful experience a reality for these students.
Staff News
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Mr Jamie Pukallus will be serving as Director of Stephen Street Campus commencing January 2022. Jamie comes to us with more than 16 years of experience in the education profession and has served as an elder in the Lutheran Church. Jamie is joining us from Highfields State Secondary College where he has held roles including Head of Department and Acting Deputy Principal. He has an established record of a considered and collaborative approach to building teams and driving school improvement. His recent focus has included high quality, inclusive curriculum, teaching and learning. We look forward to welcoming Jamie and his family into the Concordia Community. He will be joining us for a few days in Term 4 to start the handover process and meet some of our Stephen Street Campus students and staff.
I thank Mr Jason Smith for his outstanding commitment and dedication as Director of Stephen Street Campus over the past three years and I know there will be many opportunities in the coming months to farewell him and thank him for his service.
I hope that you are beginning to think about slowing down and planning to catch your breath as a family as we prepare to navigate the final week for what has been a busy term.
Stay safe and healthy.
Yours in Christ

From the College Pastor
75 Years!
In the old King James version of the Bible Psalm 90, verse 10 records the life-span of a human as threescore years and ten; or perhaps fourscore, if we have the strength. That is 70 to 80 years. In biblical times that would have been a ripe old age indeed and not that common - the average life expectancy was below 30. A threescore and ten was seen as a special blessing from God.
When the founders of Concordia College set up this institution in 1946, they looked to the future, but certainly in the stories I have read their focus was also firmly on pressing contemporary issues and concerns with getting the College established, and it took some years before stability developed.
Their vision for a coeducational boarding school was quite radical for the time, as most other non-government schools were single gender schools. The decision to go coeducational reflected Luther’s promotion of education for all, deep in the DNA of the Lutheran church. The founders wanted the College to provide a good education with a Christian focus to prepare girls and boys for service in the church and the world.
While the College officially commenced operations with an opening service on 17/2/1946 (delayed from 13/2 due to weather), we were blessed to celebrate this 75th anniversary (right in the middle of the three score and ten, and God-willing just a milestone for many, many more years to come) last Saturday with beautiful weather and with over 1,000 people registered.
The atmosphere of the afternoon reflected something of what Concordia is – there was a strong sense of community, of joy, of being together in a non-forced way. It was perhaps a bit like a country fair, the children enjoying various activities, parents, Old Scholars and staff catching up, various ensembles, choirs and bands providing entertainment, people mingling and connecting.
Of course, there was a lot of hard work, preparation and attention to detail in the background, provided by a whole group of people – and we are very thankful for them all. All this hard work came to fruition on Saturday and we were able to celebrate our 75th anniversary together.
This strong sense of community and care is at the heart of the College and all play a role in maintaining that. I was reminded of St Paul’s reflection on his ministry in Corinth, about which he wrote:
I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. (1 Cor 3:6-7).
The founders started something, but it has been carried on by many people over the last 75 years, we contribute today, but there will be others after us in the future. In God’s plan and time, all have a role to plan and we thank you for your contributions today.
Blessings for the week ahead.

What Parents Want Survey
Why you chose 鶹ý for your child or children's education is both insightful and important to us.
We’re interested to learn what was important to you and your family before and during your decision-making process, why you chose an independent school and why you felt Concordia was the right choice for your family.
We are asking parents to complete the What Parents Want Survey, which is being conducted by Independent Schools Queensland. The survey is anonymous and the data will provide us with important insights to better understand and support prospective and new families in our College community.
It is important that as many members of the College community as possible complete this survey. We will receive a personalised report for Concordia from Independent Schools Queensland if we have enough people from our College complete the survey. Again, the survey is anonymous so we will not receive any identifying information about those who complete the survey.
The survey takes between 15-20 minutes and we would be truly grateful if you are able to take this time out of your busy schedule to help us by completing it. Click the button to take the survey:

JC Sports News and Updates
Sporting Schools
Our Junior College Sporting Schools program has finished, and the students loved running around and playing Hockey which was held at HSC this term.
Regional coaches and development staff delivered these sessions, and they have a wealth of experience to share with our students. They also provide links to community and club opportunities that students can take advantage of if they choose.
The sessions went for one hour, over five weeks and credit must go to the students' enthusiasm and participation throughout these sessions. We are looking to run some more programs in Term 4 which will be confirmed later.
Auskick
Another program offered to our students that has just finished, is the ever popular “Auskick” program that was held at both WSC and HSC held after school. This is an initiative by AFL Qld targeting grassroots development and participation of Primary aged students and runs for six weeks.
It has been fantastic watching and hearing about the students’ involvement in these sessions and their competitiveness in a host of modified games and challenging drills in the great game of AFL along with their enthusiastic staff.
This may be the start of some future AFL stars and provides some great opportunities to link with community and pathways to our senior college platforms which are building each year. A big thankyou to all involved in this program.
Friday Sport - Term 3
This Friday will see the culmination of our primary sport fixtures for Term 3. This term we participated in Boys and Girls Soccer, Girls Netball and Boys Rugby League which made a very positive return to the program. Our Concordia teams performed exceptionally well every week showing fantastic sportsmanship and coming away with some great results. It was so pleasing each week listening to the students recap their game in PE lessons.
As coach of our Rugby League boys, it was great to see these lads thoroughly enjoy themselves each week, surprising many with their tenacity and ability to improve and work together as a team as the season progressed. As we were fortunate to play at the SSC Rugby League oval, it was fantastic to see so many of SSC students come and support and encourage our “stars” each week, adding to a terrific atmosphere each game. You couldn’t wipe the smiles of their faces.
Many thanks to all persons who assisted in some way each term to provide the opportunity for our students to have a game of their chosen sport, these are some of the best memories that will stay with them throughout their lives, while also having fun with their mates.

OptiMINDS 2021
The Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge is an inclusive team challenge which EMPOWERS participants to THINK, CREATE & COMMUNICATE. Our team consisted of six students between the ages of Year 4 to Year 6 from both Junior College campuses. The chosen OptiMINDS team for 2021 was: Quade (Year 6 HSC), Charlotte (Year 5 HSC), Thomas, Anya and Dinaksi (Year 5 WSC) and Marcus (Year 4 HSC). They were selected by Mrs Juanetta Priest and Mrs Jackie Minnikin after a four week trial period with six other students by showing creativity, out-of-the-box thinking and most importantly, team work.
Our team, The Humicks (Hume Street and Warwick Street combined) were required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks without assistance from anyone outside the team. Students met after school once a week to explore possibilities and experiment with ideas as they endeavoured to produce their best possible solution to the challenge set by OptiMINDS. They were tasked to develop creative and original ways to communicate this solution to others, working within predefined parameters such as limited materials, complex Challenge criteria and the deadlines of The Challenge Day.
This year’s challenge was based on the theme of ‘Belonging’ and our team decided that the poor old brussel sprout did not belong in the vegetable community because hardly anyone liked them. Great ‘out of the box’ thinking right there! The Humicks chose to participate in the Media division for their long term challenge and created an amazing stop motion animation about “Why the Brussel Sprout does belong!”.
to view their presentation on ‘Belonging’:
Typically, students would present the product of their ideas – their Challenge solution – to a panel of judges and an audience on Challenge Day. Unfortunately this year, half way through their preparation due to COVID restrictions, teams were requested to go virtual and upload their presentations instead. This was just another hurdle our first time team had to jump but they did it with gusto and enthusiasm! A virtual presentation was also required for the unseen Spontaneous Challenge on Opti-MINDS Day last Thursday, which we adapted to an OptiMINDS day at WSC to complete this six minute unseen task. The team worked hard for the morning together on refining their spontaneous challenge skills, communication and team work skills and combining their thoughts and ideas on previous years’ challenges before filming their response.
We are very proud to announce that after judging day last weekend, The Concordia Humicks were awarded ‘Honours’ for the team in Division 1 Media Category who presented solutions that best met the challenge. Well done team! Your hard work and commitment to the challenges definitely paid off!

Wow! What an amazing week we have had. It has been incredible, and I have the highest regard for our teachers and support staff. The teaching and learning that occurs on a daily basis is phenomenal. I think Bec Denny put it into words perfectly. Thank you, Bec, and everyone who made the many positive comments.
“Good evening Juanetta, I just wanted to convey how wonderful I felt after attending the festival of learning tonight. As a long-term parent that thrives on the spirit and community of our school, I have truly missed the catch ups and experiences like tonight. It was spectacular! Every year you and your amazingly dedicated staff bring a new dimension to displaying what the children have been up to, but this year took the cake! Music, food, laughs and connection all added to a beautiful night strolling around enjoying the accomplishments of our children. Thank you to everyone and of course to our much-adored teachers. Well done, HSC!! 👏🎉❤️” Bec Denny

From the WSC Director
Traditionally Term 3 is one of our busiest terms of the year and this year has been no different at WSC. Week 9 has seen swimming lessons commence for our Prep to Year 2 classes, our Year 4s busily preparing to present their Individuals of Eminence on Wednesday night, and of course our Year 6 class finalising all of their learning for the term so they can jet off to Cairns next week.
Visiting classrooms and seeing the learning that is occurring is a highlight for me each week. Today, I spent some time in the Year 1 classroom as they shared the work that they had been doing on their Animal Information Reports and dioramas. I even learnt some fun facts. Did you know that the Great White Whale has a flexible neck, and that a platypus has no stomach? Excellent work, Year 1!
Each year before our Year 6 students leave for Canberra, and now Cairns, it is tradition that they share their excitement with us by decorating the window outside their classroom. This week we saw fish and scuba divers painted on the windows in place of snow and toboggans. We wish Mr Paul Baker and our Year 6 class all the best as they embark on our first trip to Cairns next week. We look forward to hearing the stories of camp when they return after the holidays.
I wish everyone a happy and relaxing weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week for our last week of Term 3.

What a Community!
It was about 8pm last Saturday, as our 75th Anniversary Celebration Day packing up was being finalised, that I heard laughter and joking coming from the darkness in the vicinity of one of the College’s utes.
At the end of what had been an enormous effort from our Grounds, Catering and College community, there was still joy. Tyrone, our Operations Manager, was still laughing, cracking dad jokes and in high spirits. When I commented on this, knowing the extraordinary effort that had been required of himself and his team, he commented that it was the community support in setting up and packing down that had made the day “easy” to put on.
So, to the army of Parent Connect, Student and Staff volunteers that helped out in either an official or spontaneous capacity, thank you. This willingness to pitch in, giving time, talents and resources to make things happen, has become a hallmark of our community and it is greatly appreciated.
Interestingly, this willingness to be involved also comes with a good measure of humour and enjoyable conversations. To all our performing students, Mr Paul Edwards and the music staff, thank you for creating a great atmosphere for the afternoon. Finally to our Year 10 group, “The Fellas”… sensational performance! You rock!
We have one week to go… can you believe it? Our Year 11s are working through their final assessments for Year 11 before moving onto Unit 3, Term 4. Next week marks the beginning of the season of celebration with the Valedictory Arrivals and Valedictory Dinner next Thursday. Unlike last year, there are no restrictions on families, friends and the Concordia community being present to witness the arrival of the students. It will simply be a “sign in” event using the Check-In Qld App.
Finally, from next term, we are having a uniform reset. With the success that Queensland and our Local Government Area is having in managing COVID-19, we are returning to the wearing of the Day Uniform to and from school. I have put together a letter that explains the logistics. .
Have a great weekend.

Year 7 Sitting Volleyball
During Physical Education classes, our Year 7 students are experiencing Sitting Volleyball, which made its Paralympic debut at the Arnhem 1980 Paralympic Games.
Sitting volleyball is open to athletes with a physical impairment and is played on a smaller court (10m x 6m) with a lower net than used in volleyball. Teams consist of mixed classes in male and female events, with six players on the court at a time. At all times, an athlete’s pelvis must be touching the ground and service blocks are allowed.

Boarding Update
Wow, our 75th Anniversary celebration was fabulous! A few alumni boarders ventured over to have a quick look around Boarding on Saturday. It was great hearing them chat about the old days. Our current boarders really enjoyed being involved in the celebrations. Many supported in the set up and the tours. Those that were involved in the entertainment did a massive job. Many Old Scholars met up with fellow past students. Mixed emotions, fond memories and rekindled friendships. I am looking forward to our next celebration!
Our Year 11 students are in the middle of their exams and have been studying full on this week. Junior students have applied themselves and many have crossed the line. They are feeling proud of themselves because they are taking charge of how they study. Well done to you all with a big thank you to Mr Pat Rudd and his team of tutors.
We have some great sporting results this week and hopefully more after the weekend. It is fantastic that we have so many talented young sports people in boarding and this week we would like to congratulate them all: Jahaarn Harrigan, Leroy Malone, Patrick Malone, Myles Wangua, Harry Alsop, Bradley Stiller, Mason Watson, Carolyn Marschall, Kaitlyn Zelinski, Christine Watson and Selina Richards.
A busy week ahead with the Year 12 Boarder Recognition Dinner, Valedictory Dinner and travel day on Friday.
