The Week Ahead - Term 2, Week 2
Monday 26 April to Friday 30 April 2021
From the Head of College
Welcome back to school and to Term 2, 2021.
We are excited to welcome Mr Anton Prinsloo to the College next Wednesday for his first visit to Concordia and all campuses. As you would be aware, Lutheran Education Queensland and Â鶹´«Ă˝ Council have appointed Mr Prinsloo to the role as Head of College from 1 July 2021. Our community was notified by the Council Chair, and details of Mr Prinsloo’s background and experience were outlined in that correspondence. I look forward to the handover that is being planned over the coming months, and on behalf of our community, I wish Mr Prinsloo every blessing as he moves from his current Principalship into the role as Head of College at Â鶹´«Ă˝.
A busy week ahead - A Midsummer Night’s Dream is in the final throes of rehearsal, and the stage is set for the production to roll out on Thursday 29 April and Friday 30 April at the Empire Theatre. A reminder that , and we are looking forward to a full house being the order of the day on both nights. Thank you to all staff, students and parents who have been heavily involved in the many lead-up rehearsal events – it will be a fantastic production!
A reminder that Monday 26 April is the Anzac Day public holiday in our State. As a College, we will be remembering the Anzacs and all members of the Defence Forces, both past and present. Monday 3 May is also the gazetted Labour Day public holiday in Queensland.
Kind regards
Mr Adrian Wiles

NAPLAN 2021
NAPLAN tests will be conducted in 2021. All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in NAPLAN tests. Â鶹´«Ă˝ will be conducting NAPLAN texts through online testing. The testing dates for Concordia will be from Tuesday 11 May until Friday 14 May.
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already learnt through the school curriculum. Concordia teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Practice testing has taken place for all students who need to undertake the NAPLAN testing in 2021.
NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learnt. NAPLAN tests give you information on how your child is progressing against national standards.
Adjustments can be provided for students with disability to enable them to access the tests on an equivalent basis to students without disability.
Parents or guardians may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing. It is recommended that withdrawal be considered in consultation with your child's classroom teacher at Hume Street Campus and Warwick Street Campus or the Learning Enrichment Coordinator at Stephen Street Campus. Formal notification must be received by the College by 10 May. or you can contact Hume Street Campus Reception, Warwick Street Campus Reception or Stephen Street Student Services for a hard copy of this document.
More information about NAPLAN will be provided as we get closer to the testing days.

Project Based Learning at Concordia
Junior College
What happens at the end of Year 6?
Given we have three campuses, there is sometimes confusion about what happens after Year 6 at Concordia. Despite the geographical separation of the campuses, we are one College and all primary enrolments from the Junior College (Prep to Year 6) flow seamlessly into the secondary years at Stephen Street Campus.
This means there is no requirement for parents to enrol their child for Year 7 - it progresses in the same way that a student progresses from Year 5 to 6 or any other year level (except for Kindy to Prep!).
All Year 6 students and their parents will be invited to attend an informal chat with our Stephen Street Director of Campus Mr Jason Smith later this term. At this meeting, you will be able to ask any questions you have about Middle and Senior College and have a guided tour of the secondary campus.
Parents of students in Kindergarten through to Year 6 are welcome to book in a tour of Stephen Street Campus at any time. We are very proud of the enhancements that have been taking place in the Middle and Senior College over the past few years and would love to show you around - don't let that geographic separation stop you from visiting!
If you would like to visit Stephen Street Campus or have a discussion about your child's progression into Year 7, please contact the Enrolments team at enrolments@concordia.qld.edu.au or click the button below.

Welcome to Term 2!
Drive Through
Thank you for your patience as we work on returning our drop off and pick up to 'normal'. Just so that you understand the timing for the afternoons, the bell goes at 3.05pm for a 3.10pm finish of school. If you can, the ideal time for joining the line to pick up your child/ren would be around 3.15pm. By then it is pretty much a pull in and pull out, therefore, not so long to wait in line.
Aussie Hoops
A notification came out this week through the PE Department offering an Aussie Hoops lunch time activity. Please note this is an option it is not compulsory as stated on the original form. Please see the form below if you would like to register for this activity.
USQ Education Preservice Teachers
We have enjoyed having Miss Madelyn Lawry working with Mrs Busiko in Year 2. From next week, we have a further three Preservice Teachers starting with us. Mr Aaron Savage will be in Year 1 with Mrs Angela Norley. Miss Tessa McVeigh will join the Year 3 class with Mrs Weir. Mrs Annette Rogers will be working with Mr Tennent in the Year 6 class. It is wonderful the learning that we can share with these young teachers and in the process, we learn from them too.

Welcome back to Term 2. After the uncertainty at the end of Term 1, it was exciting to welcome everyone back on campus on Tuesday. Traditionally, Term 2 is short and busy and this term will be no different.
Today, the WSC students gathered to commemorate Anzac Day with a special service led by Mr Paul Baker. This service is always an important part of our calendar as our students remember the sacrifices that have been made by our service men and women throughout the years. At the end of the service, we announced the winners of our Anzac Day Colouring Competition. Congratulations to:

Calling all Dads!!
Our annual Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Thursday 6 May, where the students are able to come along and buy a present for their Mum. Pausing for One Minute
Over the next few days, Australians around the globe will pause to observe one minute’s silence as a sign of respect and reflection, as part of our Anzac Day commemorations. Standing in silence is a powerful experience that is in such stark contrast with the fast-paced hum of the society that we live in. It is important, and so we stop. We set time aside and choose to remember.
During our Anzac Day service at Stephen Street Campus this morning, I was drawn to watching our Catafalque Party, Fletcher Park and Isaac Alger. Both of these young men are in Year 10 and could well have been represented among the Anzac contingent who were required to serve their county. Young men full of potential.
As one of their super proud mums came forward at the end of the service to take some photos, my mind moved forward to the Wreath Laying Service tomorrow morning at the Mother’s Memorial, that our Captains, Mrs Natalie Houston and I will be attending. We will pause again… and remember… Lest We Forget.
Interviews
Last Monday it was great to be able to facilitate in-person Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews. We certainly missed having these opportunities last year and as one of our parents said on the night, “I just wanted to see what their teacher looked like!”
As I wandered around, there was a great atmosphere in the room. If you weren’t able to attend, know that you are always welcome to contact teachers for a conversation about your child’s learning.
A Midsummer Night's Dream
The 2021 musical has arrived! The Arts Department and students are in for a very big week. We are looking forward to the show and I do sincerely thank all of our staff, students and sponsors for everything that you have done to allow this production to happen.
Track & Field Carnival
Lastly, a date claimer. The Stephen Street Campus Track and Field Carnival is being held on Thursday 6 May. We have a food truck, coffee van and Student Council snow cones for sustenance. Parents and grandparents are most welcome to attend. Hopefully, we will still be enjoying our perfect Autumn days.
Have a great weekend and see you at the Empire!
Mr Jason Smith
Director of Campus
Subject Changes
Changes in elective subjects for students in Years 9 and 10 need to occur at the end of a semester. For students in Years 9 and 10, subject changes can occur at the commencement of Term 3 which is the start of Semester 2. If there is a need for a change of subject before the commencement of Semester 2, then a subject request needs to be made directly through myself.

Future Visions Finalists
Four senior Visual Art students, Stuart Larsen and Gracie Paynter (Year 12), Chelsea Loader and Jasmine Hollonds (Year 11) have been selected as finalists in USQ’s Annual FUTURE VISIONS exhibition. The Senior artworks chosen demonstrate a range of diverse materials and skills from our four students, including oil and acrylic painting, photography, and pixelated painting on an old Holden car door.
The exhibition will be on display at USQ’s School of Creative Arts Gallery from 22 April. In Week 4 of this term, Years 11 and 12 Art students will be attending a local excursion to view the exhibition and USQ facilities. Congratulations to our talented students!

Boarding
Boarding News
While winding down for Term 1 holidays and the looming lockdown due to COVID-19, we were presented with some small challenges that required a last minute drive to Brisbane to ensure our international students could get to their respective homestays.
Hours were spent on the phone re-arranging flights and accommodation and parents and caregivers organising special leave so as their daughters and sons would be at home prior to travel day in the event the borders would remain closed.
Many thanks to those who communicated with us and most of all thank you to all students for their great efforts in packing down at short notice and leaving their areas neat and tidy. Compassion and consideration was demonstrated to all parties.
With the love and support from our families, our students are ready to embark on Term 2.
Lots will be happening this term with the Musical in Week 2. All full time boarders will be attending the production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Friday 30 April. Our very own Boarder Captain, Carolyn Marschall is in a lead role. Mia, Kahlia, Kaitlyn, Georgette and Indiana are in supporting roles. As is said in the performing industry, “Break a leg girls". Meaning, good luck! Seriously ladies, we are all very proud of you. It has been a huge amount of work and commitment on your behalf, along with keeping up with your studies and sports commitments. We cannot wait to see the performance.
Staff will be attending various rural shows promoting our College this term. I am heading out to Goondiwindi next weekend while Mr Jason Smith and Mrs Bianca Coleborn are heading to Beef Week in Rockhampton. Our Registrar, Mrs Michelle Price will be attending the Chinchilla Show in a few weeks. Please feel free to pop in for a chat if you’re in the area.
Our boarding calendar is packed full of weekend activities which will keep everyone busy. For our weekly boarders who would like to remain in for any weekend when there is an activity to their liking, please feel free to do so. A quick phone call or email by Thursday prior to the weekend would be appreciated so as I can update our meals numbers and advise the Business Office. We can always accommodate personal requirements such as laundry and shopping.
Welcome to our newest student, Harry Allsop. Harry is a very talented musician with a great sense of humour. We wish you well, Harry on your journey here at Concordia.
We would also like to welcome Alexis Le Garde to our boarding team. Alexis is from Brisbane and is currently studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts, majoring in Visual Arts. A great addition to our Learning in Residence program. Alexis was also a Youth Leader at her church.
