The Week Ahead - Term 1, Week 4
Monday 15 February to Friday 19 February 2021
From the Head of College
In the coming week, we will begin our celebrations of the 75th Anniversary of the College. As outlined to the community in past weeks, we will be planning to hold key events in the latter part of this year - for obvious reasons. On Monday, we will start an awareness of our history by providing ‘birthday’ cake to all students and staff. The College Captains, Isabel Barton and Thomas Head, and I will visit all campuses to speak briefly to the students and to enjoy the cutting of the symbolic cake by Campus Captains.
The College officially opened its doors for teaching on 13 February 1946 under the leadership of Pastor Rudolph Altus as the first Principal. He welcomed 27 students, 23 of whom were boarding students. The historic Redlands Building and surrounding lands was purchased to serve as the home for the College – famously, Mr Joh Bjelke Peterson (later to become a long serving Premier of Queensland) was a member of the committee.
Other activities quickly found their place into the College’s culture with the first athletics day and speech night held before the end of 1946. Academic results continued to improve to a point where it was stated that ‘the founding fathers were humbled by the goodness of the Lord in this leap of faith’.
A vital part of the culture was the attention to Worship, which became life-long practices for many students. Many aspects of the College culture changed over the decades, but the most important cornerstone that has never changed is reflected in the College Motto, Nisi Dominus Frustra – “Unless the Lord builds it, it is built in vain.†No matter what the activity, the principles of Christian Education still apply. This is what makes Â鶹´«Ã½ distinctive and unique.
Concordia College expanded with the addition of our Warwick Street Campus, which effectively dates to 1946 because a small upper primary class was on the Stephen Street site early in the development of the College. Hume Street Campus was established in 1977.
What is in a name?
- Â鶹´«Ã½ has been called ‘Concordia College’, ‘Concordia Lutheran Memorial College’ and now ‘Â鶹´«Ã½â€™.
- Â鶹´«Ã½ Hume Street Campus was called ‘Martin Luther Primary School’
- The Kindergartens have been called different names and are now called Â鶹´«Ã½ Hume Street Kindergarten, Â鶹´«Ã½ Warwick Street Kindergarten and Â鶹´«Ã½ OSHC.
Over the years, Â鶹´«Ã½ has grown to epitomise the word ‘°ä´Ç²Ô³¦´Ç°ù»å¾±²¹â€™ – which means ‘agreement, unity and harmony’. Together we stand united with our hearts and minds open to the myriad of opportunities before us.
Kind regards
Mr Adrian Wiles

Now is the time to enrol for 2022!
Enrolments at Concordia are continuing to go from strength to strength. Already our 2022 WSC Prep Class has only a few places remaining and the HSC Prep class for next year is over 50 per cent subscribed.
Our Year 7 cohort in 2021 is the largest we've had for several years and it appears that 2022 is set to exceed that number again.
Existing families with younger siblings to be enrolled in 2022 are strongly encouraged to submit an application form as a matter of urgency to ensure their place is secured. Without an application form, we are unable to allocate a place for a future student.
The good news is that if you are an existing College family, we will waive the $100 application fee. Use the code clc-sibling at the checkout to waive the fee.
To enrol your child, please complete the online application form:
If you have any questions, please contact Michelle and Bianca in our Enrolments department at enrolments@concordia.qld.edu.au.

75th Anniversary Celebrations
On Saturday 13 February, Concordia turns 75!
We will be recognising this milestone with a cake cutting at the assemblies taking place at each campus on Monday 15 February.
We have purposely delayed our major celebration until later in the year in the hope that COVID-19 restrictions will ease and make holding a significant event possible.
Please save the date - Saturday 4 September and watch this space as more details are released.

Student Behaviour
This week on Assembly, we recalled that Hume Street Campus only has three rules for us to work and live by. They are to:
- Be safe
- Be respectful
- Be a learner
We love only having these three rules, because they are so easy to remember. If we need to manage student behaviour, this link explains the steps that are taken. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please talk with your child’s teacher.

Warwick Street Campus
From the Director
“Do the right thing – even when no one is looking.â€
This week at Assembly we discussed the first of eight quotes we will be looking at this term. Doing the right thing even when no one is looking, was an excellent introduction to the students learning about integrity.
Integrity is one of the main qualities that positively influences a child’s character and behaviour and shapes their understanding of what is right and wrong. It forms the basis of good relationships and has a positive impact on all in our school community.
Over the coming weeks, you will see these quotes hanging in various locations around the campus. I encourage you to discuss these further with your children.
At Concordia, we believe that all students can develop their individual capacity to lead and influence others in a responsible way.
Next Friday our Year 6 students will participate in the first of two SMART leadership days. Smart is an acronym for:
Selfless
Making connections
Attitude
Risk Taking
Together
The activities for this day will be held at Stephen Street Campus and will begin with a breakfast at 7.30am, with students, Year 6 parents and members of the Stephen Street Campus Middle College. Mr Jason Smith, Director of Campus at Stephen Street, will also be joining us for breakfast. I look forward to sharing this time with our Year 6 students.
P&F
Our upcoming P&F AGM will be held on Monday 15 February at 2pm in the WSC Resource Centre. I encourage all who are able, to attend this meeting to discuss how we can further support the students at Warwick Street Campus. Please see the “Word on the Street†for more details.

Stephen Street Campus
From the Director of Campus
Happy birthday, Concordia! 75 and feeling younger than ever!
Monday afternoon saw the Stephen Street Campus quadrangle come alive with a large group of parents and students for our P&F Welcome Canapes and Parent Information Evening. We certainly missed these opportunities last year and are looking forward to more face to face time with our families.
Today our Year 7 and Year 12 students are having their own forms of fun activities. Year 7 students are slipping and sliding, playing on jumping castles, testing their accuracy on an inflatable dartboard and piecing the clues together on their scavenger hunt.
At the same time, our Year 12 students are engaging with representatives from universities and QTAC at our University Road Show. For parents of Year 12, it is interesting to note that in exactly 12 months, Orientation Week for most universities will be about to commence. This showcase is just one of the opportunities for students to gather information as they consider their pathways beyond Year 12.
On a personal note, our family is heading to Brisbane this weekend to settle my son into his appropriately “student quality†accommodation as he commences Pharmacy at UQ. I personally find this transition to uni and greater independence a very rewarding time as I share the adventures of their next steps in life.
Remember that our is a fantastic resource for students and families to keep up to date with everything from university open days to local job opportunities. For families who own businesses and may be looking to recruit either a school-based apprentice, trainee or have another form of employment that may be suitable for students, we can share this opportunity via this website.
On the schedule for next week, the week starts with an opportunity to come and connect at our P&F meeting. It’s at 6.30pm in the western end of the Function Centre. I’m looking forward to reconnecting on-site in person.
On Tuesday, we have Elevate Education coming to deliver the Study Skills Kick Start, Memory Mnemonics and Study Sensei sessions for our students in Years 7 to 10. We have found these sessions to be highly valuable for our students in helping them to better understand how to study and work effectively. Tuesday evening has the Elevate Education Parent’s Seminar from 6pm to 7pm in the Chapel. I encourage parents to come along as it will assist you in providing consistency in strategies as you support your child in their learning. Please register via the link in the email that has been sent.
From Wednesday to Friday, our Year 8 students along with Mr Dave Rentell, Mrs Karen Rohde and Mrs Sonya Holden will be heading out to Ironbark for their Year 8 Camp. As a past staff member of St Peters Lutheran College’s Ironbark Outdoor Education Centre, I am particularly pleased to have been able to secure this site for our camp. I look forward to visiting our students and having the opportunity to be back at this incredible outdoor education centre that was my home for five years (there is a high risk of nostalgia setting in…).
Lastly, our week will be capped off on Friday with breakfast with our Year 6 students and their parents hosted by our Middle College Leaders. I will be attending, along with Mrs Roslyn Cook, our Years 6-8 Year Level and Pastoral Coordinator. We are looking forward to mingling and getting to know our 2022 Year 7 students and their families. I hope that our Year 6 students have a fantastic day as they enjoy the Smart Leadership activities.
Have great week.

Year 11 Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) Applications
Application for students in Year 11 in 2021.
An Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) is provided to minimise as much as possible, barriers for students whose disability, impairment, medical condition or other circumstances may affect their ability to read, respond or participate in assessment.
If your daughter or son is currently in Year 11 and you are wanting to support your child through submitting an AARA application, an AARA Medical Report and a Student Statement must be submitted to the Director of Learning and Innovation. Please use the links below. Alternatively, hard copies of the documents are available at Student Services.
After completing the forms, as well as providing proof of a medical diagnosis, these can be handed to Student Services or emailed directly to Wendy.Bowen@concordia.qld.edu.au.
Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority (QCAA) have changed the AARA application process. They now require medical support documents to be dated the year the AARA is required for. For 2021, all medical documents to support an AARA application must be dated 2021.
If you need more information, please don’t hesitate in contacting the College on 4688 2700 or email me directly at Wendy.Bowen@concordia.qld.edu.au.

SSC P&F News
What a fabulous turn out we had on Monday to the P&F Canapes and Parent Information Evening. It was wonderful to see so many new faces (parents and teachers) as well as all the familiar ones. A shout out to the students who looked after us on the evening, serving the canapes and drinks and, of course, to our kitchen staff for the delicious food. Thank you to everyone who came along and the staff who gave us an insight to our year ahead.
After the year that was 2020, where we had some interesting learning curves as we all switched from on-campus life to online structures, we are looking forward to being able to meet and interact again face-to-face with the new normal that is now part of our world. As such, I am excited to announce that we will have our first P&F meeting for the year on Monday 15 February, commencing at 6.30pm in the Concordia Function Centre (Noack Room). It will also be combined with our AGM that was rolled over from the end of last year.
Along with welcoming back co-members and existing family members who have been part of our meetings over the years, we would love to see some new faces join us, share ideas and be a part of what is looking at being a very exciting year with the College production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and °ä´Ç²Ô³¦´Ç°ù»å¾±²¹â€™s 75th Anniversary.
If you have any ideas for fundraising, a question or concern you need help with, please feel free to email us at SSCPF@concordia.qld.edu.au
Have a fabulous weekend and we look forward to seeing you Monday evening.

Boarding Update
Unbelievably, it's Week 3 already!
We are pleased to say the first weeks of the school year in boarding have been fantastic. All the boarders have settled very quickly into the busy lives they lead here at Concordia.
Here is a short clip of one of the enjoyable aspects of boarding – having fun with friends. This clip is the boys after school, loving their basketball.
Best wishes,
